High-Fructose Corn Syrup and its Connection to Obesity

This is how the food industry makes Americans fat and hungry

Published: 02 January, 2013, 21:25

Inundated with foods and drinks that contain high-fructose corn syrup, the US food industry is largely at fault for driving up obesity rates, since the cheap sweetener inhibits the brain from regulating the body’s appetite.

From soda to ketchup, many processed foods and beverages contain fructose, which affects the region of the brain that regulates appetite, according to a study by the Scientific American, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers measured the hypothalamus, which regulates hunger-related signals, of 20 healthy adult volunteers to study their responses to consuming sweetened beverages.

Upon receiving a 300-calorie drink sweetened with 75 grams of fructose, the volunteers had a more active hypothalamus and showed greater signs of hunger. When the volunteers received a similar drink that was instead sweetened using glucose, their hypothalamus was less active and the participants showed signs of fullness.

Drinking glucose “turns off or suppresses the activity of areas of the brain that are critical for reward and desire for food,” Yale University endocrinologist Dr. Robert Sherwin, who was involved with the study, told the Associated Press.

With fructose, “we don’t see those changes,” he added. “As a result, the desire to eat continues – it isn’t turned off.”

This was new to me. Dr. John Pagano is a recognized expert on treating psoriasis. The cure does not conflict with list 1-7 (except about citruses), but he makes it twice as long. The only red meat allowed is lamb. No fish at all, but shellfish is ok. Tomato/ketchup and white potatoes are NO-NO. Fruit & vegetables should be 80%. Very interesting.

Nutritionists recommend that Americans keep away from food and beverages that contain high-fructose corn syrup, and instead look for those that contain glucose.

The list of what to avoid is long:

  1. Wheat (more glycemic than sugar) and gluten (cluttering of digestion)
  2. Sugar (cane sugar is ok)
  3. Diet drinks/aspartarme
  4. Margerine and diet versions
  5. Fried food/frying of food
  6. What will cause high acid values (high alkaline values are good - lemon is perfect)
  7. Farmed fish (wheat fed)

BEER FAT MO-BETAH!

Well the reason that the volunteers had a more active hypothalamus and showed greater signs of hunger is a diversion from the cause.

This is not rocket science. Hunger is intricately linked with blood-sugar levels. When you consume hyper levels of concentrated sugar (like refined sugar or alcohol) your body responds by sending out insulin to the rescue.

That's your body's response to putting out a fire on the carbohydrate level.

Problem is, that the insulin response is so overwhelming it starts shuttling SO much sugar out of your blood (by converting it into fat) that after the fact, your blood is high & dry with respect to sugar.

And when there's no sugar in your blood you get REALLY hungry.

This is the basic carbo/sugar/insulin dynamic 101 folks.

Main point being: maintain STABLE blood sugar levels as much as possible.

Even if you got a sweet tooth you can still eat your cake and have it too.

(which BTW makes no sense to me, because how can you eat your cake & NOT have it

if it's digesting in your stomach?)

Big shrug.

Anyway, super-refined sugars can be slowed-downed with respect to the rate that they are absorbed into your blood by adding things like fat & fiber.

(so as not to trigger a hyper insulin response)

Which is why something like M&Ms with peanuts, for example, while providing a shitload of sugar do not spike your body to overact with a hyper insulin response because the fat in peanuts

mixed with the sugar in your gut, slow-up the sugar absorption rate

and prevent your body from overeating with a hyper insulin response

I should probably write a blog about this yin/yang balance thingy with respect to

blood sugar & insulin but at this point in my life jokes are more important.

Great post, Tara. It absolutely does cause hungry, and created a pandemic of diabetes. It is linkedto cancer, especially of the pancreas. Sharing.
