New York City politicians are blasting comments by Facebook members who appear to be New York Police Department officers who refer to participants in the city's annual West Indian-American Day Parade as "savages" and "animals," the New York Daily News is reporting.
The New York Times on Tuesday reported about the Facebook comments, some of which were made by people identifying themselves as NYPD members. Some of the commenters refer to the parade as "this coconut parade," the News reports.
The parade takes place in Brooklyn, N.Y., over Labor Day weekend and attracts many members of New York's large Caribbean population. In recent years, the color and frivolity of the event has been marred by death and violence.
