Police: 4 Attacked By Pit Bulls In Nassau County

Inside 30 Minutes, 2 Wild Dogs Altered The Lives Of A Teen Boy And 3 Women

LAKEVIEW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Police on Wednesday were searching for two dangerous dogs that attacked four people within half an hour in the Nassau County community of Lakeview.

Officers went door-to-door to try to find the vicious dogs, but were not successful, WCBS 880′s Sophia Hall reported.

“There is a possibility they went back to the homeowner and the homeowner is unaware of the incidents that occurred, but that’s why we’re doing a door-to-door search to see if any of the neighbors [know who owns the dogs], or possibly come upon the owners of the dogs, and lets figure out what’s going on, how did the dogs get out, why are they so vicious,” Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack told Hall.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a 16-year-old boy was attacked by the dogs while walking on Parkside Road and Cedar Road, police said. He suffered injuries to his left arm.

About 10 minutes later, a 54-year-old woman was attacked while walking on Pinebrook Avenue and Parkside Road, police said. She also sustained injuries to her left arm.

A neighbor scared the dogs away with her car.

“If I never would have pulled up, God knows what would have happened to her,” Shavaun Williams said.

Around 6:50 p.m., Janelle Manning, 24, was walking on Pinebrook Avenue and Tyler Road when she said the dogs came out of nowhere and lunged at her.

“I’m screaming at the top of my lungs, ‘Help, help,’ and I’m screaming at the dogs ‘Get off of me, go away,’” Manning told 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera. “I feel myself hitting them in their face and back, but they’re still jumping at me.”

Because of a badly injured left leg, Manning now struggles to get downstairs.

“These dogs were, like, trained to kill; trained to hurt and viciously attack people,” Manning told CBS 2′s John Slattery.

She described the dogs as pit bulls — one brown, the other gray. The attack happened as she walked toward her home.

“One literally went for my leg and other was trying to jump on top of me, but I was hitting them, and I was punching them, and I was hitting them with my purse,” Manning said. “They both weren’t letting go, once they got a hold of my leg.”

Manning said as the dogs were biting her, a neighbor came out with a stick to scare them off.

“I’m so glad that my neighbor came out of her house when she did,” Manning said. “I’m so glad they were able to chase the dogs away because these dogs were not letting go.”

She suffered injuries to her left leg and right arm and is now on crutches, Rivera reported.

“The back of my ankle is chewed up,” Manning said.

At 7:01 p.m. Kashina Sylvester, 29, was in front of 33 Clinton Ave., when she was attacked by the pit bulls, police said. She suffered injuries to her face, both arms and left shoulder.
