There is a reason why essential oils have stayed popular, both in the United States and abroad, for such a long time: They really work. Whether it is for health reasons (such as using eucalyptus oil to relieve sinus congestion) or for household care (like spritzing a room with oil of rosemary to disinfect it), the ways to use essential oil are virtually limitless. Most people tend to discover just a few essential oils that they like and stick with them. However, there is also a lot to be said for trying out new oils, especially really versatile ones like lemongrass. Most fans of Thai cuisine will recognize lemongrass as being essential to many dishes from this area, and its wonderfully sweet and lemony oil has some pretty amazing uses for health and home. Some of the best uses are discussed below.

Muscle relaxer

Rubbing essential oil of lemongrass into muscles that are tired, sore or even in spasm (like a Charlie horse) can help to quickly relax and unknot those muscles and help to relieve the pain and discomfort they can bring.

Headache reliever

Applying a little oil of lemongrass to the temples or forehead for a headache is a soothing and rather quick remedy for this problem. It is particularly useful if the headache is caused by sinusitis, allergies or hay-fever.

Acne treatment

Acne is the bane of teenagers everywhere – but not to worry! Adding a drop or two of lemongrass oil to a carrier like almond oil and applying it to the affected area can help to relive this problem due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Antibacterial cleanser

For a natural way to kill off bacteria and disinfect the home, add lemongrass oil to products already in use. This will not only leave the home smell fresh and lemony, it will also make it cleaner and safer due to its strong anti-microbial properties.

Insect repellant

If mosquitoes, ticks or other pests are a problem around the home or garden, consider making a natural insect repellent. This can be done by diluting lemongrass oil in a carrier like almond or olive oil and applying it directly to exposed portions of the skin.

Flea repellant for dogs

Adding lemongrass essential oil to a bandana or a collar of a dog can help to naturally repel the fleas that can drive a dog – and his owner – crazy! Be sure to not use this on cats without talking to the vet first, as cats are more sensitive to essential oils than dogs are.

So consider adding lemongrass essential oil to the your home care kit today. While it is not as widely known in the West as it is in the East, this excellent oil has many uses for both health and the home that make more than worth the while to purchase.
