You are Probably right for most people. My parents never said anything about crooked jews but for awhile I was brought up by grandparents (who were exports by the brits on assisted passage) and I always remember grandmother saying to never step though ((their)) door without your two half crowns. In case they had got in over the not welcome mat and set up shop. Two half crowns in those days weight was an ounce and scales could be checked.
