Hoping to head off growing opposition in both parties over the US bombardment of Libya, Democratic Senator John Kerry and Republican Senator John McCain Tuesday unveiled a resolution authorizing Barack Obama to continue the NATO campaign for up to a year. The Kerry-McCain initiative comes amid growing controversy within both parties about Washington's involvement in three wars. The debate was further fueled last week by the administration's contention that US military operations in Libya were not significant enough to require Congressional authorization under the War Powers Resolution. Earlier this month Democrat Dennis Kucinich and Republican Walter Jones introduced a measure to cut off all funding for Libya operations. The Kerry-McCain measure is designed to settle the War Powers issue and stave off legislative challenges to the $10 million a day the Libya war is costing. Meanwhile war fatigue is building in Congress and in the country.Source |
