The G20's Accused Two Years Later: Dan Kellar

Over the last two years, activist journalist Dan Kellar has watched many of his friends get arrested, face harsh bail conditions and serve jail time for their involvement in protests against the G20 summit in Toronto in 2010. Although he was not himself charged, as a member of AW@L and the Southern Ontario Anarchist Resistance, he worked closely with activists facing conspiracy charges.

In August 2011, police linked to the 2010 Toronto G20 summit operations arrested Kellar as he was leaving his house in Kitchener. The Ontario Provincial Police's Anti-Rackets Branch charged Kellar with two counts of criminal defamation and counsel to commit assault. The charges stem from a blog post he wrote on peaceculture.org, which referred to two undercover police who had helped bring charges against G20 activists. In the post, which warned activists that one of the officers Bindo Showan was spotted in Toronto, Kellar invited people to "scoff at his existence" and "spit in his footsteps".

Kellar was released on condition he take down the post and does not step within 500 metres of the two undercover officers he referred to in his post, Brenda Carey and Bindo Showan. His judicial pre-trial wrapped up last month, when the defamation charges were replaced with intimidation and criminal harassment. His preliminary hearing is expected to take place in December.

Kellar continues to work with AW@L producing AW@L radio as well as producing the Grand River Radio program on CKMS 100.3 in Kitchener-Waterloo.

OpenFile spoke to Kellar at his home in Kitchener for this series on the G20's Accused Two Years Later. We spoke with Mandy Hiscocks and Alex Hundert in the first two segments of the series.
