Jed,

Yes the G6RV is well done. It is such a simple low cost design too. It's pattern will change a bit with it's proximity to the ground. I believe the lower it is placed the more omni it becomes to a point. A steep V is not recommended but gradual is better. It's still a long run no matter how you bend it. And the center support grows huge to handle it too.

These 60~160 antennas are a big problem without spending up. I like the Jr. for 40-10 very much so far, Do you have a A/tuner yet? The Pro III manages it well so any A/tuner probably would as well. I met a local ham. He came over and talked a bit on my rigs to test them out. He's letting me test out an IC-7000 for a while and maybe buy it for mobile use. It uses the LDG IT-7000 A/tuner and it matches the G5RV very well too.

So for now Jed and Jonesey I have 2m SSB capability with the IC-7000. He wants $700 for it. We'll see......

Still no callsign....

Later!

Minuteman, my lot is also 1/10 acre and using the G5RV may be problematic unless I set it up as an inverted V. I need to get reading my copy of the ARRL antenna book so I have a better understanding of antenna theory. Without a rotor, whatever I use should be omnidirectional, like a vertical. I think a wire dipole will have more oomph in 2 directions. The vertical I have for 2 meter is a TRAM, roughly 6 foot with 3 downward sloping radials near the bottom. As far as the G5RV goes, the only reason I didn't get the JR is because it was part of a trade for an old Radio Shack 25 watt 2 meter mobile rig I had that has seen better days, and all the guy that wanted it had to trade was the G5RV. Not sure I have enough room for it either but will see what I can rig up. Perhaps a high enough mast with the dipoles in an inverted V. Once it's up I'll try and match it for 10 meter, as Tech class doesn't have HF access to more than that.

Jed,

Thanks! It's been fun so far even in dummy mode for now. Those G5RV's are pretty impressive for what they are and cost. I had to get the JR. version as I've only got a 54ft run max on my 1/10 acre lot. The resident antenna Nazi (wife) only allows them in the back quarter but this antenna farm is growing.

The Pro III A/Tuner should match the G5RV Jr from ~60 or 40 up through 10 meters. I would be more than happy with that. Not bad for a $28 antenna that setup in an hour. Very good choice for a SHTF scenario.

I was looking real close at a used 430 at HRO in NH last week. A legendary radio with excellent receive. I don't know if that one was peaked but it was a honey. I was just about to buy it then the Pro III popped up on Craiglist for $1600 so I took it. Far more than I wanted to spend but it was a screamin' deal I couldn't pass up. It'll be my last HF/6 radio I told my wife...ha!

What vertical did you get? I'm looking for a 6/2/70 Omni now for diversity receive on the 2820 and 6 meter RX on the Pro III. The BRV-5 (I think) keeps getting my attention. Drop that on the beam mast maybe. I dunno..... I need more real estate.

I'm finding 40 at night and 20 in the day and from the chat I'm hearing you would probably hear the same. I'll post my Callsign when it's listed....we can connect on RTTYor PK31 I'm sure...when you get your G5 up and running.

Later....

Logan,

Sounds like you got a hot radio there. 11 meters will pick up when the sunspots return. Haven't had alot of action there these days. Conditions are all wrong lately.

Minuteman, congrats on getting your General! Still studying for mine while upgrading my equipment and antennas. Have a new 2 meter vertical will be roof mounted to my Yaesu 2800, pushing 65 watts. A Kenwood TS430-S which needs a mic and power supply should cover everything else, both sidebands, phone, and CW. Got a G5RV to try and rig up on this small lot for the HF rig and I should be good to go for now.

Jonesey,

No SSB on 2m yet. I'm in Central New England and that would be quite a haul down to you. When conditions are right I'm sure it could be done though, I've been receiving the most action in the 40m band for such distances. It's extremely active these days. Even with my humble G5RV strung out between 2 trees 40 is lit up like a christmas tree. Are you finding the same down your way? That band is hot right now.

Well the radios and license are what I wanted forever now since I was a kid 40 years ago. This forum was enough to push me over the edge to get the G. My callsign still hasn't been listed in the FCC database yet as I only tested out on Thursday. Those mics are just sitting there for now......'cept pounding the dummy load.

We should do that under the right conditions. I'll look forward to seeking out your net.

MM,

Way to go on getting your General. Nice pair of radios, too.

If I can get my 13 element 2 meter beam up, maybe we can try some sideband at an appointed time. Local guy here in north cenral Missouri was talking to Oklahoma the other night 2 meter sideband. Not sure where you are, though.

Good luck and congrats.

Jonesey,

Got my General and picked up some gear. Pro III for HF/6 and a 2820 for 2 meter/70cm. The study sites allowed me to sit and pass tests for both tech and general at the same time. This with a week of study on and off. Got a 6/2/70 beam up at 400ft ele for now and am working on a repeater for 10/6/2/and 70 with gateway on a local hillside at 1200 ft. It's a buddys property.....
