Disney has announced that membership within their secretive "Club 33" is now opening, and 100 people on the lengthy waiting list will be invited to join.
"Club 33 is a private club located in the heart of the New Orleans Square section of Disneyland. Officially maintained as a secret feature of the theme park, the entrance of the club is located next to the Blue Bayou Restaurant at "33 Royal Street" with the entrance recognizable by an ornate address plate with the number 33 engraved on it." No matter how you see the Disney Corporation - be it a benevolent and heartwarming company which provides exciting and magical memories to children that last a lifetime, or a sinister and inhuman corporation that manipulates young minds and instills greed and consumerism - there’s no doubt that Disney is not solely what it seems from the outside.
The company that has become synonymous with childhood has such a long and enigmatic history (sometimes with seeming leanings toward the occult) that it’s no wonder that speculation runs rampant about what might go on behind the scenes.
Reportedly, Club 33 maintains fewer than 500 members who all pay a $25,000 entrance fee and $10,000 in yearly dues. Access has been severely restricted, and membership rolls have been closed for more than a decade.
New members will get initiation not only to the Club 33 restaurant on 33 Royal Street, New Orleans, but they also get access to the new private club named "1909" (the year Walt Disney was born).
Disney envisioned Club 33 as a place to entertain investors and business associates, although it didn’t open until six months after his death in 1967. But a Disney dream was realized: Presidents, dignitaries and celebrities have all stepped through the door at 33 Royal St.
Rumors about Club 33 have long swirled on the Internet, as Disney die-hards and other hopefuls shared what they had learned about the almost mythical membership. Koenig worried that as the club expanded, some of the magic would fade.
"For me, it seemed very neat and special to have this one little club that nobody knew about," he said. "We’re losing that a little bit."
