A senior US official has called on the Lebanese government to act “within Arab and international consensus” regarding the situation in Syria, Press TV reports.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman said in a press conference in Beirut on Wednesday that “maintaining and strengthening this consensus to send a message to Syria is very important,” a Press TV correspondent reported.

Feltman arrived in Beirut on Wednesday to hold talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and other officials “on a range of issues, including the situation in Syria.”

Elie el-Hindy, an assistant professor at Notre Dame University in Lebanon, told Press TV that Lebanon is definitely part of the US interests in the Middle East.

“Definitely, any measures against Syria would not be as effective as Lebanon is not on board,” Hindy said.

On November 27, the Arab League approved unprecedented sanctions against Syria, including a freeze on assets possessed by the Syrian government and an embargo on investments for projects in the country. Lebanon and Iraq abstained from the vote.

Hindy said, “I think this is a fine line that the Lebanese government has so far played pretty well.”

“We can see and understand very well the reasons of Feltman’s visit and the message he is trying to pass to the Lebanese government,” the Notre Dame University academic said.

“The point is to see to which extent they (Lebanese government) would be able to remain neutral in that sense or the international community would consider them as allies to Syria and probably try to take measures against them as well,” he added.

i  just  want to throw something out--this  may be more  than a mideast problem--i  have heard that similar actions  particularly Venezuala  are in the works--all  of this was made possible by the  destruction of the USSR --if  you think about it.

I  spoke  with someone  from Algeria  because  I knew this was going to spread--now she said  she did not like Gaddaffi many  "leftists" here including OCC  Boston  and Occ London  said the same thing. She had  some right  to say that--though I think she was wrong--the  west has NO  RIGHT At the moment  we cannot  change  gov  attitudes but--particularly among white occupiers  it is possible--this is not a new  problem the  white  west  right  left center and even part of the black  west  has been infected  with a "humanitarian  imperialism" the  worst  crimes in the  world  we should remember  are taking place in Congo--but the rhetoric over a hundred years  ago was initially "humanitarian" and "improving" it  should be no surprise  that  many people in the  west are infected  with "improvement" which is a  very deceptive word--remember even a giant like Paul Robeson supported Israel (though had he not been murdered--yes murdered) he  would have  not held that position that  had to do with wwii  --but I have argued  that at LEAST  people  should  shut up about  things they no nothing about-btw  what exactly is a "dictator" to me it is a throwaway  word  as is "democracy" unless they are  precisely defined they  become propaganda words  and the fact is  people fall for them "terrorist" is another--people will say Assad killed x amount of people what  complicates it is  they will also  say the US  killed x amount of people--what they will NOT  say is the US  killed  x amount of black people say in Hartford Conn--sometimes the police sometimes  starvation  aids of pathologies  inflicted by  western governments --it may seem like a  small point  but  throwing  words around is a dangerous business. one other point--since this technology (which is not ours but there's makes it  difficult  to  write  out  reasoned analysis people are  prone  to sound bytes. Last point  what is happening now  seems to have been  planned  around 2003 for that I have evidence (others say even earlier)
