You may have seen it on various portable radios and communication receivers. Its the mystery band for USA SWL's, You may have heard of AM, FM and Shortwave bands. Not all shortwave radio receivers have it especially the ones under $99. But as an awareness we should encourage all manufactuers to include this extra band especially when travelling overseas or you live there. Or if our national AM broadcast band cannot take anymore broadcasters we need an alternative, thats why I am showing you this feature you probably never knew existed on your portable radio. If you bought a radio without the LW bands, then who ever made that radio was pretty darn lazy to design it properly and if you use that radio in some where in a foreign country and you are far away from AM and FM stations and you know there are 2 or more LW stations, then that radio could be useless. Especially if you are located out in the desert in Algeria.

Here are some videos that may interest you in LW DX.

Give Up? It's called the opposite of shortwave, its another AM broadcast band down below the AM broadcast band. Its called the Long Wave Band 150 to 300 kHz range. If anyone here in the UK or any other country wants to talk about it more feel free to. It's nothing more than a local AM broadcast band broadcasting on low frequencies. You hear various content like you hear on the AM broadcast bands. You see, the FAA and the ITU wanted to block out the long wave band from American listeners using that part of the spectrum on 190 kHz to 300 kHz by allocating non directional beacons, but there is a way to get around it. Its called an improved version of your internal ferrite core bar antenna called a loop antenna.

The LW band started in early days of broadcasting in Europe, the engineers thought they could transmit farther and it sure is proved through modern day listeners called SWL's. The signal propagates the other way around
off the curvature of the Earth called ground wave propagation and the Sporadic D layer. People on the east coast of the United States is able to receive LW broadcast DX only at late afternoon and at late night till 2 AM. So it is best to DX these stations with a loop antenna or long wire antenna with ground at times at 6 PM to 3 AM EST. For western DXer's its different from Eastern listeners. You have to start DXing late night to butt crack of dawn at 3 AM to 6 AM PST. The middle part of the country, tough luck unless you have a real huge loop antenna you might or might receive Pacific or Atlantic DX.

If you are making a preselector for the LW bands you simply need to order a
2.5 mH choke and a 365 pF capacitor. They are around 2 to 5 dollars. Or you can simply get the MFJ 956 and yes it comes with a schematic diagram if you really wanted to know more about it. You active antenna may not work cause of noise it picks up even those dimmer switches. You need a tunable loop antenna. Soon Grundig will come out with one for longwave bands. You can build yourself one. Just use 60 to 100 turns of wire on a box with variable tuning capacitor.

With or Without Loop Antenna

153 kHz - Algeria - In The Clear
162 kHz - France - In The Clear
171 kHz - Morocco - In The Clear
180 kHz - Germany - In The Clear
183 kHz - Germany - In The Clear
189 kHz - Iceland - In The Clear

This is where the tricky part starts and needs a big loop antenna! These stations would be great addition to your log book if you have a loop antenna.

With Loop Antenna

198 kHz - UK - Jammed By Beacon DIW (Strong NDB)
207 kHz - Morocco - Jammed By Various Various NDB's
216 kHz - France - Jammed By Beacon CLB and Various NDB's
225 kHz - Poland - Jammed By Various Non Directional Beacons
234 kHz - Luxenbourg - Jammed By Various Non Directional Beacons
252 kHz - Ireland - Jammed By Beacon LLW and Various NDB's
261 kHz - Russia - Jammed By Various Non Directional Beacons
270 kHz - Czechoslovakia - Jammed By Various NDB's
279 kHz - Isle of Mann - Jammed By Various NDB's

An active antenna will not work, but a directional active loop will.

There you have it, here is another link for LW DXing, and if you have longwave on your radio then you can DX LW stations especially if the solar activity screwed up the Shortwave propagation you can still DX LW stations via groundwave @ night! 73!
