Hey JED, I am a fellow ham radio enthusiast (as well as a newbie), but I think the potential for a SHTF communication net is the best bet available. I am interested in gaining knowledge wherever I can, and I just wanted you to know that I am all ears for any tidbits of wisdom you might have. I am currently fooling with coax connections to try and get the best bang for my buck (as well as my antenna). I have a dedicated "Control Room" that I recently constructed in my garage that I am hoping will develop into a bona fide "communications center/hobby room" (it also doubles as a pretty good recording studio for my audio creations as well)

Jed, I got myself a battery/power pack as a power supply for my rig, and it works awesome! I can leave it plugged in to keep the charge up, or I can take it with me as a portable power supply. I just wired a 12v cigarette plug onto my radio which I plug into the 12v plug on the power pack. Also works as a jump start unit, and universal power supply with a 75w inverter I bought for $10.00. Best of all, it only cost me $35.00, compared to the $100-200 price for a radio power supply.

Now you've got me thinking. I have a Yaesu FT-8900R that runs a maximum of 50 watts. Does the 12volt power source give me enough juice to run it properly? Also, what is your location? Would we be able to connect through 2, 6, or 10m?

Thanks for the info. What's the difference between ham and short wave? Years ago, I thought it was "am" radio short for ameteur, not "ham."
