Some Australians have been cc’ing Attorney General George Brandis on all their messages to protest a proposed metadata law. The plan took off after some critics of the controversial proposal quickly realized it was possible to send messages directly to the attorney general’s phone, thanks to his decision to link his parliamentary e-mail to Apple’s iMessage service.
Brandis eventually unlinked his publicly available e-mail from the service, but not before being thoroughly bombarded with messages. So far, the attorney general’s office has declined to comment to the Australian media on the matter.
The law in question would require communications providers to retain all metadata for phone and Internet users for two years. The bill, called the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Amendment (Data Retention) Bill 2014, has gained enough support to pass in parliament with some planned amendments, Business Insider Australia reported.
In response, an activist group called Beyond Green suggested that the law’s critics give Brandis what they believe he is essentially asking for: a heads-up on all their personal communication, just in case he wants to read it.
