Three esteemed professors turned Dartmouth College into a “21st century Animal House” by treating female students like “sex objects,” hosting late-night hot tub parties and boasting about who had the “hottest lab,” according to an explosive lawsuit filed Thursday.
Seven women — including two who say they were raped — are suing the exclusive Ivy League school in New Hampshire over a mountain of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Todd Heatherton, William Kelley and Paul Whalen. The plaintiffs say the school has known about their behaviors since 2002 but chose to do nothing about it.
The trio of professors was part of a “predatory club” in Dartmouth’s Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences who routinely preyed on young women and retaliated against those who spurned their unwanted advances, the New Hampshire federal court suit says.
“These professors leered at, groped, sexted, intoxicated and even raped female students,” the complaint alleges. “These professors ensured the young women in the department were vulnerable to this sexual harassment by conditioning faculty mentorship and support on students’ participation in the alcohol-saturated ‘party culture’ they perpetuated.”
The oldest allegations date back at least 16 years against Heatherton, the former department head and an influential researcher on campus who helped the school obtain a $21.8 million grant in 2005, its largest ever.
