I used Adobe Photoshop CS3 to remove the backgrounds of the photos and turn them into transparent PNGs using the "save for web and devices" option. Then I used Adobe Flash CS3 to turn them into movieclips with the effects set to brightness control. By adjusting the brightness of each pic to match the background image the combination of images is brought into a reasonably natural looking harmony. Then the images were published to a single PNG image file from the Flash interface.
