I recall my elderly grandparents vehemently coercing my sweet self and brothers to consume this vile concoction of disgustingness to ward off any flues and ills that may lurk. As slimly and bitter as it was on the other side of the coin (for some unknown reason) it left a sudden but pleasant feeling of overall body warmth after consumption. The wicked stuff was made in the 1800s and widely used and all kids were made to take it. My grandma used to say 'you'll take it and and not put me out to buy shoes for you to wear at school"- in those days shoes were only put on for special occasions like church or the queen visiting. We never got the flu and the odd blocked nose would be cause for a paper handkerchief only. Everything stoped in 1970 when the company was brought out and the product never made again. Fortunately 10 years ago a museum ran a competition to try and recreate it and the great granddaughter turned up from the inventor describing what she saw and smelt when she visited his factory, another individual produced a sample from what was described and declared the winner and so the recipe lives on - well most of it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm going to have ago at making it... It's got• Big proportion of oil of cod livers
• Healthy dose of brandy
• Dash of meade
• Spoon of honey
• Generous dose of milk of magnesia
• Selection of fine herbs marinated in cider vinegar
• 1 fresh egg yolk
• Secret ingredients ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~There's no idea on quantities other than that given and there's also Beechwood creosote, mineral lime, soda and vitamins included. (don't know what herbs and vitamins ? - if there's suggestions anyone ?) Maybe I'll try Thiamine, banana powder and coconut oil as a thought. You take the Emulsion Or suffer Explosion.
