Who's Afraid of the People's History?
A recent Associated Press expose—drawing on e-mails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act—revealed that in 2010, Mitch Daniels, then Indiana’s Republican governor, covertly set out to ban Howard Zinn’s best-selling A People’s History of the United States from Indiana’s classrooms. Daniels had privately responded to Zinn’s death that year with unseemly glee; “This terrible anti-American academic has finally passed away,” he crowed.…

It will be 300 years until the radioactive effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, following the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan nearly two and half years ago, go away.
The calamity knocked out power to the plant, sending its three active reactors spiraling out of control.
Since then, 400 metric tons of water a day is still being used to cool the melted fuel cores.
UC Davis Emeritus Professor Dr. Marvin Goldman says radioactive elements of…

Dr. Sanjay Gupta speaking about marijuana with Piers Morgan on Wednesday. (Screenshot)CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta is making waves this week saying he was wrong about medical marijuana and that Americans have been “terribly and systematically misled” on therapeutic uses of the drug.
In an op-ed entitled “Why I changed my mind on weed,” Gupta writes that he is “here to apologize” because he failed to do adequate research on medical marijuana, and did not review…

It’s that time of year again, National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). NIAM begins each year in August and acts as a reminder for adults and children to get their recommended vaccines.

The encrypted email service provider Silent Circle has followed its competitor Lavabit who on Thursday announced it would shutter its services rather than be compelled by the US government to hand over the private data and emails from its customers, one of whom is believed to be NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

America's wealthiest households are increasingly squirreling away their cash, according to two recently published reports, in a trend that could pose a threat to the economy at large and exacerbate already high levels of income inequality.
America's top 1 percent saved their money at a rate of 37 percent last quarter, according to a recent survey from American Express Publishing and the Harrison Group highlighted by CNBC. That means that during that period, wealthy Americans put away…

How is it that the government can charge Edward Snowden with espionage for telling a journalist that the feds have been spying on all Americans and many of our allies, but the NSA itself, in a public relations campaign intended to win support for its lawlessness, can reveal secrets and do so with impunity? That question goes to the heart of the rule of law in a free society.

This piece first appeared on ProPublica.
When the House of Representatives recently considered an amendment that would have dismantled the NSA’s bulk phone records collection program, the White House swiftly condemned the measure. But only five years ago, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. was part of a group of legislators that supported substantial changes to NSA surveillance programs. Here are some of the proposals the president co-sponsored as a senator.
As a senator, Obama…

There are rules for the common people and rules for their "leaders," and only in rare cases do the same rules cover both. Chris Morran at the Consumerist points out how politicians (yet again) are being allowed to ignore the same laws that affect their constituents. Colorado legislators are immune from speeding tickets and parking tickets thanks to the special plates issued to lawmakers -- ones that aren't included in the DMV database.
According to CBS Denver, the info for these…

We are currently in the middle of a peak or solar maximum which has brought us more solar flares, CMEs, and geomagnetic storms. Historically, research has been conducted to link the 11 year cycle of the sun to changes in human behavior and society. A big event is about to happen on the sun which may assist in this process–the sun’s vast magnetic field is about to flip in just a few months.
The sun is a major source of visible light and energy on this planet. It represents…

The first thing to know about the danger from the radioactive mass remaining on site in the three reactors that melted down at Fukushima is that nobody knows how much radioactive material there is, nobody knows how much uranium and plutonium it contains, and nobody knows how to make it safe — so no one knows…

The recovery still doesn't feel like one for many American families -- in part because a long middle class decline is still under way.
The recovery is now officially in its fifth year. Sure, the stock market is back. And housing is getting off the floor. But for middle class Americans, the pressure is still on.
This has been an uneven recovery, with the benefits accumulating to the rich and the corporate sector while regular folks have largely been left behind…

Benjamin Disraeli wrote about an alliance of aristocratic 'Anglo-Saxons' and aristocratic 'Jews' ruling the world. "There is one man who can properly be regarded as the father of Zionism and Nazism: Benjamin Disraeli." "Disraeli called for an Aryan-Semitic alliance to form an organized superior 'Caucasian race' that was destined to rule the world..."

Doubling the minimum wage may seem like a good way to help fast-food workers, but it would hurt them instead. So what should we do? We must sweep away the government-created barriers to income earning, barriers that protect established businesses from competition and rob the most vulnerable people of options.
Last week, fast-food workers engaged in 24-hour strikes throughout America to bring attention to their struggle to make ends meet. They have been demanding an increase in the…

It would seem so. First, the USDA’s National Organics Program refuses to enforce standards set by the National Organic Standards Board requiring organic farmers to allow their hens outdoors. Responding to complaints that organic farmers …

They call it precision agriculture, and it’s a hot topic. Across the country, new-age farmers are hacking their operations with robots, sensors, drones, and good-old circuit boards, hoping to increase both the quality and quantity of their fruits, vegetables, and grains.
But that’s merely a first step. Thanks to the burgeoning field of “cloud-based genomics,” we will further improve our crops by, well, plugging them into the internet.
Scientists and entrepreneurs have now…
