At least 56 police officers have been injured during a night of mindless anarchy” in Belfast city centre when loyalist protesters attacked police with missiles, local media reported.
Northern Ireland™s Chief Constable, Matt Baggott, urged politicians and community authorities to condemn culprits behind the chaotic violence unequivocally.
A republican rally was being held to mark the introduction of internment without trial in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, when the violence erupted in the Royal Avenue area, a usually busy commercial street close to the City Hall.
Seven people were arrested after police were bombarded with bricks, bottles, stones, fireworks, marbles fired from catapults and smoke bombs.
Loyalist rioters also attacked police with missiles, including scaffolding poles and paving stones ripped up from a main shopping district.
Police deployed water cannon and plastic baton rounds in a bid to quell the unrest. “I know that 99%, if not more, of the population will stand with me in utterly condemning those who scarred the reputation of our beautiful city last night,” said Baggott.
“Those people had no intention of peaceful protest, they lack self respect and they lack dignity”, he added.
Baggott warned the rioters that those responsible would certainly be identified and arrested.
“The only voices we should hear now are those unequivocally condemning the violence and supporting fully the actions of the police and the rule of law and I don’t want to hear any excuses for the disgraceful scenes that took place last night, because quite frankly there aren’t any”, said the Chief Constable.
The trouble broke out as the city hosts thousands of international visitors attending the World Police and Fire Games.
Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers also condemned the rioters. “Last night’s violence and attacks on police officers were shameful. After success for Northern Ireland this summer as host to both the G8 summit (in Co Fermanagh in June) and the World Police and Fire Games, disorder on the streets is a hugely regrettable step backwards”, she said.

The Irish are a feisty bunch ..
if announcing the introduction of "internment (concentration ) camps without a trial were introduced here in America i wonder what we would do? hmmmm hey we already had the announcement of the NDAA and there was barely a ruffle as americans just changed the channels on there TV's
I get confused with the factions in Ireland and why and who they are fighting on any given day. So the people in this case were violent for what reason, they were demanding something, being targeted by authorities or just soccer hooligan types?
