Media Dwells on Alleged Second Fort Hood Attack Following Norway Carnage

Less than a week after the bombing and shooting in Norway, the corporate media is reporting that a Muslim possessing weapons and explosives was apprehended near Fort Hood, Texas, the site of a deadly shooting attributed to Major Nidal Hasan in 2009.

Jason Abdo Nassar, an AWOL soldier from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was arrested on Wednesday in the city of Killeen, Texas, according to the FBI.

The BBC reports Nassar attempted to buy guns near the base and was found with bomb-making materials. CBS adds that he asked gun store employee how to make a bomb. He allegedly told police about a plan to kill and injure people.

“Whatever threat Mr. Nassar posed yesterday has been eliminated and mitigated, and there was nothing to indicate he was acting with anyone else,” said Eric Vasys, a FBI special agent in San Antonio.

The establishment media is portraying the story as a foiled terror attack. Fox News posted an “exclusive” report on its website today stating the soldier raised “security concerns” and was specifically arrested in a plot to attack Ford Hood.

Nassar, however, does not fit the stereotypical description of a Muslim terrorist. Killeen police report he was arrested for child pornography. He also applied for conscientious objector status last August.

Officials at Fort Hood and at the Justice Department did not say the suspect was plotting a terrorist attack on the military base.

“We are aware at this time that Killeen Police Department arrested a soldier yesterday,” a Fort Hood official said in a statement Thursday. “The incident leading to the arrest did not occur on Fort Hood and the soldier was not a Fort Hood based soldier. At this time, there has been no incident at Fort Hood. We continue our diligence in keeping our force protection at appropriate levels.”

A Justice Department official would not say if Abdo faces federal charges. Fox reports that an investigation by the department suggests charges may follow.

Following the Fort Hood attack, the corporate media had a field day hyping domestic terrorism. Former Homeland Security boss Michael Chertoff – now in the business of peddling dangerous naked body porno scanners – warned that a catastrophic terror attack was right around the corner. “Now we’re beginning to see the predictions coming true,” he said.

No terror attack followed Chertoff’s fear mongering.

The Fort Hood shootings were possibly triggered by the refusal of Hasan’s superiors to process his requests seeking to have some of his patients prosecuted for war crimes based on statements they made during psychiatric sessions with him. The corporate media and neocon bloggers, however, dwell on the more colorful Islamic jihad story line.

After Pentagon dinner guest Anwar Awlaki – the imam from Las Cruces, New Mexico, who was groomed to replace Osama bin Laden – praised Hasan following the Fort Hood attack, the corporate media dredged up scary apocalyptic quotes from the usual suspects and careerists working in the “counter-terrorism” business predicting imminent attacks.

As we have noted, the odds that you will be a victim of a terror attack is astronomically low. You are more likely to die in a car accident, by walking across the street, by drowning, in a fire, by falling, or by being murdered.

“Even if terrorists were able to pull off one attack per year on the scale of the 9/11 atrocity, that would mean your one-year risk would be one in 100,000 and your lifetime risk would be about one in 1300,” writes Ronald Bailey.

According to statistics, your chance of dying in a car accident is about 1 in 83, but you don’t hear Michael Chertoff warning about the dangers of motoring.
