Rod Evens and Richie Blackmore were originating members of the legendary band Deep Purple considered to be the fathers of Heavy Metal music. Rod Evens was like the psychedelic Elvis who performed with Deep Purple for their first 3 albums. After a number of disputes with Ritchie the flamboyant lead guitarist of Deep Purple, Rod Evens was ejected from the band. Ritchie was a temperamental artist known at times to get violent.
Irony of membership
Rod established a new band not long later by the name of “Captain Beyond” which had an immediate hit on the charts after unveiling their first LP. To blend in with the style of the new band Rod Evans reinvented his vocals so as not to overshadow the Captain Beyond sound. In years before after Deep Purple were on a hiatus Rod had attempted to tour with a version of Deep Purple using former members of the band in the past, but Ritchie Blackmore filed a court injunction to prevent Rod Evans and his new incarnation of Deep Purple from touring the US. One might recall the same thing happened with the members of Pink Floyd when bassist and original member of the band fought the other three members of Pink Floyd over their use of the name “Pink Floyd” just because Roger Waters had left the band. Rock music is often not kind.
