Center of the storm: complete history of New Black Panther case

* November 17th, 2010 12:16 pm ET

Do you like this story?

At the center of the storm surrounding the corruption scandal at the Department of Justice and the Obama White House is the New Black Panther Party. In order to fully comprehend and appreciate the seriousness of the scandal, the complete history of the New Black Panther case must be considered.

To that end, a blog called 'Perfection Under a Red Umbrella' has provided an in-depth, thorough report on the history and background of the case.

The introductory remarks to the blog entry provide an informative overview of the basic facts:

"On April 23, 2010 the U.S. Civil Rights Commission Dismissed the Charges Of Voter Intimidation Case Against Members Of New Black Panther Party.
"These charges stemmed from an event on election day in November 4, 2008, as stated in charges drawn by The U.S. Justice Department, which filed a lawsuit under the Voting Rights Act against the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (NBPPSD) and three of its members alleging the defendants intimidated Philadelphia voters during the Nov. 4 general election."

Following the 2008 Presidential election, the New Black Panthers were charged by the Bush Administration, which was in its final days, with voter intimidation stemming from a video and accusations by citizens indicating that 3 members of the group were wielding clubs and billysticks at voters outside a polling area.

The 'Red Umbrella' blog picks up the story from there:

"The suit alleged that on Election Day two New Black Panther Party Members, (NBPPSD) members Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson were stationed at the entrance to a polling location at 1221Fairmount Ave., wearing the uniform of the organization. It also states Mr. Shabazz repeatedly brandished a “police-style baton weapon.”

"The NBPPSD was designated an active black supremacist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). At the time the incident occurred, Lovida Coleman, a lawyer for the McCain campaign’s Honest and Open Election Committee, was told by one of the men that he was a “committee person for the 14thWard, 4thDivision.” She was also told that the two men “were members of the Philadelphia Democratic Party and they were authorized to be there.”

"The complaint said that NBPPSD Chairman MalikZulu Shabazz confirmed that the placement of Messrs. Shabazz and Jackson was part of a nationwide effort to deploy NBPPSD members at polling locations on Election Day. But this conflicts with a contemporaneous statement the NBPPSD posted on its Web site that the actions of the two individuals were not endorsed by the organization."

But before the new Obama Administration, which took office in January, 2009, had barely settled into their new surroundings, the Department of Justice under the newly-appointed Attorney-General Eric Holder suddenly and without warning dropped the charges against the New Black Panthers.

So controversial was the decision not to prosecute those charged with federal election crimes that several officials within the Justice Department resigned in protest. One such individual was DOJ trial attorney J. Christian Adams, who had some scathing words for Eric Holder and the Department of Justice, which the Democrat-controlled Congress chose to ignore.

Adams' explosive assessment of the corruption behind the decision not to prosecute can be found at American Thinker.

The scorching assessment by Mr. Adams, along with the video of the incident, and the secret emails and documents released yesterday by Judicial Watch, all point to a culture of corruption at the DOJ that is frightening in its scope and depth.

If the federal Department of Justice is so corrupt, the question becomes, can ANY citizen ANYWHERE in America reasonably expect to receive a fair trial? And, is there any reasonable assumption that those charged with protecting society by prosecuting criminals will, in fact, faithfully discharge those duties without prejudice?
