The octopus robot has been invented, according to scientists.
Scientists in the United States on Thursday said they had devised a soft-bodied robot, inspired by the squid and octopus, which can crawl, camouflage itself and hide from infrared cameras. The robot, developed in conjunction with the Department of Defense, is a soft-bodied robot that can camouflage itself when required.
The project, a collaboration between Harvard and the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), investigated squid and their properties to help advance soft robots. Scientists involved in the project said the objectives involved determining whether scientists could replicate some of the functions of the squid, or simpler animals with simpler strategies for camouflage.
The color-shifting robot can move at a speed of approximately 40 meters per hour. Without fluid, the robot can move at approximately 67 meters per hour. Researchers, however, note that the robot’s speed is of little importance as it is designed to move over surfaces without being detected. At a fill rate of 2.25 milliliters per minute, researchers say that color change in the robot requires only 30 seconds.
