Congressional hearings will begin next month on a Clinton Administration plan to revamp some key pesticide laws. Among the reforms, the Administration wants to drop a 35-year-old ban on cancer-causing pesticide residues in processed foods. The controversial proposal would allow minute traces of carcinogenic pesticides in food, as long as the health risk is minimal. The new rules would also prohibit the export of pesticides which are banned in the US, and ease the removal of dangerous pesticides from the market
How can a 35 year old ban on CANCER-CAUSING PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN ANY FOODS be lifted and not corrected?! I am not sure of the current administrations stance on this matter but ran across this on "Living on Earth" website. Who or what type of progam/cabinet/focus group determines whether HEALTH RISK BEING MINIMAL? Surely it is controlled by many agricultural chemical companies to some point. If anyone can find current information on this issue I would love to know...and I will still keep looking. People...be aware. This is probably still being left open due to the step up to corn growing for ethanol...this supposedly leaves a gap for dropping any ban since ethanol is for fuel. Buffalo Springfield softly playing in the background.....
