Dear C4L Member,
Yesterday, the Senate’s cloture vote for the
DISCLOSE Act (a.k.a. The Establishment Protection Act) failed by a vote
of 57-41. Your efforts paid off by ensuring the Democrats were unable
to
sway any Republicans to break the filibuster. This is a tremendous
victory in the fight against statism for all freedom-minded
organizations!
Nevertheless, this is no time to ease up on the Senate. Harry Reid voted "no" just to able to bring it back up under Senate
rules for another vote as soon as tomorrow night.
We
need to keep up the pressure to make sure the “New England triplets”
(Scott Brown, Susan Collins, and Olympia Snowe) are not convinced to
support the bill by some last minute modifications, as Chuck Schumer
attempted to
do earlier this week.
While it is easy to fall back into a
feeling of apathy after a significant victory, this is only the first
round in a
potentially long, drawn out legislative battle. This is a time to
redouble our efforts and increase our opposition to this First
Amendment-shredding legislation.
We thank everyone for their
hard work, collecting signatures and faxing petitions, making calls and
sending emails; but we encourage everyone to keep up the pressure to
guarantee the privacy and security of our members’ information remains
uncompromised.
In Liberty,
John Tate
