Hackers: Uncle Sam Wants You Hack For The US Government

The average age of hackers is 16 to 19 years old, according to one survey of over 200 well-known hackers, and 70 percent of them lived in the US. The US government is seeking to recruit these young men (90 percent of them are male) and women to hack for the US Government. In 2010, 20,000 cybersecurity experts were needed in the US, but only 1,000 were employed as such.

The Pentagon is struggling to build its cyber workforce, since most of their “cyber warriors” are often recruited by the private industry.

Young hackers could earn a $50,000 salary with very little formal education and a Certified Ethical Hacker could earn as much as $105,000 annually.

These young technical minds have been mostly self-taught, with little thanks from high schools. Currently, only five percent of High Schools offer an AP course in Computer Science. While schools are lacking, President Obama recently addressed the issue in his state of the union address, citing the need to “create classes that focus on science technology, engineering and math.” In the meantime, some programs mentor tech-minded kids and help them to develop their skills outside of school. Code Academy, for example, is a free online school that teaches anyone how to code.

This infographic explores the future of hacking and the nation’s cyber security.
