John A. Keel was a veteran journalist. He traveled all over the world investigating things that did not sit quite normally with the general public. In the 1960's there were few articles that exposed the unusual, yet the unusual existed. John A. Keel was relegated toward the unaccepted, the strange, and unexplained. That was fine with John who claimed it was a UFO over the pyramids in Egypt in 1953 that changed his world forever.
Many possibilities
Somehow, the aliens, apparitions, and voices from the thin air combined to convince John that UFO's, ghosts, paranormal activity, and Fortean phenomenon all originated from the same source! By the early 1960's he was convinced that a central force was originating spirits, extraterrestrial beings, and ultra-dimensional beings!
Testing the shadows
John's close relationship with Ivan T. Sanderson, a popular TV biologist that entertained children over zoological studies, taught him that things are not what they seem. Ivan T. Sanderson, a WWII intelligence agent revealed the existence of USO's long before they were addressed or dealt with in mainstream media! The US Navy had been tracking high speed underwater mystery objects since the mid 1950's and could not establish who they belonged to. A respected children's TV celebrity had discovered a foreboding mystery. Was this why years later he would succumb to a strange form of aggressive cancer? Ivan T. Sanderson like many of Keel's friends connected with the world of the unknown died suddenly. In his book the Eight Tower John A. Keel laments many times about the loss of his friends and even warns people just as was seen in the movie " Mothman Prophecies" the same title as his previous book, not to venture into the world of the paranormal it would eventually destroy you!
Forbidden lands
In the movie, "Mothman Prophecies" Alan Bates gives one of his best performances not long before his death as he warns character John Klein, played by Richard Gere, to leave his investigation of the Mothman sightings alone! In real life John A . Keel spoke from his own experiences delving into forbidden mysteries that could originate from the demonic realm and were therefore dangerous to associate with! We must be reminded that 2 US Air Force intelligence officers reviewed the lengthy files of Project Blue Book years after the agency had been terminated by the US Air Force and concluded that the source of the phenomenon was demonic activity! Even famous UFOlogist, Jacques Vallée concurred with the realm of evil being responsible for the flying saucer mystery, and he worked for decades trying to give legitimacy to the extraterrestrial theory!
Perilous chase
John A. Keel led a colorful career having set out on a Himalayan expedition to find the Abominable Snowman! His search led him from Sherpa village to village just missing the recent sighting by hours. Finally as he and his guide climbed to the upper valleys crested by cliffs above he glimpsed the Yeti only in a furry flash of movement leading him further on in his pursuit. All he wanted was a photograph. All he wanted was to prove once and for all that it was real. He chased further along the slopes until finally he had it cornered in a rocky corridor with only steep rocky walls on either of its narrow inlet. Here, he would finally catch a glimpse of a century old enigma. His guide refused to go further, too frightened to see.
A revelation
Suddenly it came to John that if he managed to snap a few photos and his claim to fame and fortune were realized what would happen to this entity. The entire world would descend upon Nepal and the slopes of the Himalayas to capture and kill an enduring mystery that also had much spiritual significance to the people of the region. It was then that he made the decision to let it be. Keel turned away and in so doing gave up a grandiose future for exposing the true evidence behind the supposed myth. His moment of enlightenment had arrived.
Price of the Rabbit Hole
Weeks earlier on the same journey he had been struck in the knee by a cobra at the foot of the mountains grabbing the head of the venomous snake and yanking it from his flesh. He descirbed the horrid breath of the animal with a piece of his own flesh in its mouth! Saying that when the snake struck him it felt like someone had hit him with a sledgehammer! The local people were forced to assist in his recovery using their local tonics to save him from the poison in his system. Keel describes once being fed pickled sheep eyeballs that caused him to suffer dysentery too. He had paid a great price in his obsession to track down the Yeti, but when faced with his opportunity he realized the futility of his quest.
Summation
John A. Keel is a testament to just what the search through a rabbit hole of the dark world can do when one goes about probing into the perpetual darkness of wicked mystery and inexplicable paradox. Perhaps, some things should forever remain undisturbed like Pandora's Box, better left unopened. For mankind has already opened enough such containers of soul sucking depravity!
