Although I am diametrically opposed to all American troops currently on foreign soil and especially vehemently opposed to the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Gaza, Congo, Yemen, Kosovo and what was Yugoslavia I thought this picture provided a glimpse of actual US power and brought to my mind a variety of current issues.

This is the USS John F. Kennedy docking, I think, in Malta recently.

That 'crap' is just mud being pushed up to the surface by the mooring tugs as well as the water being roiled from the carrier's hull. You see the effect anytime a vessel is docking in silty or muddy bottomed water.
Nothing more then what you do when you swirl your hand in a shallow pool of water at the beach and cause the particles of sand to become water borne, thereby discoloring the pool.

Yep, mighty damn big. I got to take a little look at the USS Carl Vinson in about 1987 from the inside. We entered through the interior hanger bay where the elevators are and it was like walking into a four lane highway that's going through a tunnel. I also got to see the maneuver engines which a friend of mine, who served aboard, worked on. They were the size of a large van though maybe a bit longer and I believe he said there were six of them altogether, but that the main engines were nuclear powered. Apparantly the six maneuver engines were only used for maneuvering slowly in and out of port.
