We only need own permission to challenge anyone about to decline our rights at any particular time. All your rights of thought, expression, religion and belief, conscience, etc, can be protected by your own self when you can address those rights head-on. One small example I've found in my time is If you're summoned to court for jury service and application for exemption is declined then you must know You have the right to approach the judge and decline to serve based on conscience, without having to give a reason. There's not that much the judge can do after that point.
