iData Research: U.S. Market for Female Sterilization Devices to Grow 36% in 2009

According to two market research reports by iData Research (www.idataresearch.net) - an international medical device, dental and pharmaceutical market research firm - the U.S. market for female sterilization devices will almost triple in value by 2015. Within this market, transcervical sterilization devices, which grew over 54% in 2008, will account for the majority of the growth.

Transcervical sterilization involves the insertion of soft micro-inserts into the fallopian tubes via the cervix. These inserts promote a local inflammatory response, resulting in scar tissue that blocks the ova from being released or fertilized by sperm. This procedure has been growing in popularity as it is hormone free, can be done easily in a doctor's office, and is an alternative to more invasive sterilization techniques such as surgical tubal ligation.

"The U.S. market for women's health devices has seen healthy growth in 2008," says Kamran Zamanian PhD., CEO of iData Research. "Within this market, female sterilization devices, in particular transcervical sterilization, have seen the most rapid growth. This trend is expected to continue in the near future, as we see new companies introducing products into a currently monopolized market."

The reports state that a new transcervical device was approved early 2009 in Europe, and is awaiting FDA approval in the U.S. The reports also state that recent trends in minimally invasive office-based procedures are estimated to increase in most segments of women's health.
