In Time to See a Mushroom Cloud
You didn’t plan it this way
Begging your baby to stay
Your world turned cold and gray
She told you there was nothing you could say,
How did the sky turn so black?
It seems they never come back
Tell yourself not to have a heart attack
Somehow your world got off track,
What a blues song your life could be
Your own personal penitentiary
Marked by passion and treachery
Just like a fool’s gallery,
I said, “Baby put down that phone.”
“Are you going to really leave me all alone?”
Guess she headed for parts unknown
The skeletons in the closet still moan,
Another reason to sigh
A new day and a blue sky
Seems there’s nothing but goodbyes,
Just sit back and count the lies,
Velvet words of the silver tongued snake
Forbidden fruit before the earthquake
Where do you find the truth for God sake?
Can’t even seem to have and eat my cake,
And just when I could laugh aloud
Perhaps allow myself to feel a bit proud
Maybe peel off this self-inflicted shroud
I looked up in time to see the mushroom cloud.
