Dover: Chemical spill forces people indoors, closes I-77

DOVER -- Police say they are advising people to stay indoors with their windows shut and their air conditioners off after a spill at Dover Chemical.

Police say there is no indication yet on what chemical is involved in the spill.

Police say they have received reports from residents of a vapor cloud following the spill. Efforts are underway to suppress the  chemical cloud.

The company is located in an industrial park that is situated right alongside Interstate 77 in northern Tuscarawas County.

The interstate is closed in both directions between Strasburg and  New Philadelphia.  Detours are being posted.

No evacuations have been ordered.  The first calls for the spill came in at 9:20 a.m.

On Feb. 8, 2012, one worker at Dover Chemical Corp. was taken to a nearby hospital after a mishap with some chemicals. Officials described the man's burn as "minor," but the company said it would investigate the matter.

In November 2011, a vapor cloud at Dover Chemical Corp. sent three workers to local hospitals. Authorities at the time said no residents were ever in danger.

Yep.  That place is RIGHT along the Interstate; also a Veterinary Hospital there, where I have taken Ellie for treatment on a few issues.  (More serious than the normal farm vet, but not Ohio State level - Dovert Vet Hospital is pretty good.)   SCARY.

North- and southbound lanes of Interstate 77 near Dover have reopened after being closed for nearly four hours when an overheated reactor at Dover Chemical Corp. resulted in the release of dipropylene gylcol, according to a news release from the Tuscarawas County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.Area residents have been advised to close their windows and stay inside until an all-clear is given.
