The maternal grandparents of Íñigo López de Loyola were full-blooded conversos - the grandfather, Dr. Martín García de Licona, was a merchant and financial advisor at the Spanish court.
The Jesuits as a religious order 'maintained an open policy towards conversos long after the other orders had closed their doors to them.'
