After watching HBO’S documentary about the rigged election in Iran this past year i was prompted to write this song (Neda~Freedom Fight). The song was inspired by Neda. A girl of her twenties living in Iran. Neda had the heart of a lion. With all the political corruption looming over the most recent presidential election in Iran anger and social unrest had hit an all-time high. The presidential race had for the first time televised debates between three candidates. This was a first for Iran and the people had saw a shift in policy for the first time. A feeling of possible change had charged the atmosphere like never before.People had taken to the streets to rally for change in the political landscape. Now Iranian’s felt they had a choice in the future of Irans political policy’s. When the day of voting took place record amounts of people turned out to cast their ballots. In Iran they count each vote by hand. This process you can understand would take a great deal of time. Theres the first count and then the second count ect. This would seem more accurate than the De bolt system that was used in the election that put George Bush jr. into office. Just when every one had their hopes up only 3 hours after the voting ended it was announced that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won the election. Every one new it wasn't possible. The people of Iran took to the streets in peaceful protest and many where beaten and killed. The government had arrested any forign media so it could not be filmed. What they could not control was those with camera phones and twitter. It would be these forms of communication that allowed the rest of the world to see what was going down. The government had tried to jam any attempts for communication via the internet. Twitter had agreed to not shutdown for maintenance to keep the channels clear for communication to friends and family trapped in the mayhem. Then a dj from California had designed a program titled “Hay stack” to foil the efforts made by the government to block info from leaving Iran by way of the web, and it worked, Thats just fucking awesome .I encourage you to take the time to view this documentary by typing in “for Neda”on line, or renting it. You can see it via the web for free. You can really start to understand how much freedom is taken for granted in the USA as well as other parts of the globe when viewing this film. Iran is a place where women have such little civil rights that it is just painfully arcane. I don't want to ruin your viewing experience by disclosing too much of the films content. I was so moved by it that i had to do my part. I wasn't sure what that would be until later. My part would be this podcast and the song “Neda” that i have sent to the family. Please i challenge you to watch the film and not do anything. At the very least pass it on to friends and family and keep the message alive that freedom is not free, and Neda did not die in vein. Neda was a musician and a free spirit ,that spirit could not be killed by a bullet. Neda’s spirit lives on in so many ways, and so many people. In a country that is so corrupt, they hide behind a warped religious belief that says a women's beauty is so dangerous and evil that it must be hidden behind a shroud so as not to temp man with evil in pure thoughts. These men are not men of God, they are cowards. Polarized by centuries of man made religious beliefs that the mask with political policies and ideologies, in the name of “GOD”. They more you learn about what has happened in Iran, the more upsetting and astonished you will be to accept that this is going on in 2010. Once in a while someone comes out to rise above the establishment and say enough is enough and gives their young life to a cause and belief. This time it was Neda. You see by the government trying to silence her with bullets, it has only served to keep her voice an spirit alive. Neda has been given immortality by the very government that tried to silence her. I believe that sometimes justice has a funny way of showing up, and in this instance Nedas blood will lead the path for change in a land where a women's voice might not be heard, her deeds will.
