Before and after the Beijing Olympics, China has come under the spotlight for its human rights issues. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has failed to uphold its promise of improved human rights and media and internet freedom.

After the 2008 Paralympics, the SOH network interviewed Ms Gao Yu. Ms Gao was the winner of the Woman of Courage Award, presented by the International Women’s Media Foundation for her support for the disabled people in China.

Ms Gao believes the communist regime has grossly understated the number of disabled people and by doing so, fails to provide support to them and in actuality ignores their basic human rights.
In 1987 the first survey of disabled people was undertaken, but this was not done in accordance with international standards. Ms Gao says at the time, the survey recorded 80 million people, which is about 10% less than if the survey was carried out by international standards. This number was deemed excessive by the communist regime, so they reduced the figures to 50 million disabled people, thus wiping out 30 million people.

According to Chinese state media, a second survey done in 2006 recorded 80 million disabled people, about 6% of the population. However, Ms Gao believes the real number to be far greater than this.
Ms Gao believes that the CCP boasts on one hand its support for the disabled, while in fact it does the opposite.

Speaking on the Sichuan earthquake disaster and the toxic milk scandal, Ms Gao believes the problems all stem form the authoritarian regime of the CCP. Ms Gao says the one party dictatorship and its destruction of human rights is the most anti-humanity system in the world.

She believes the international society should recognize the harm brought to the world by the communist regime. She also believes that the responsibility for the numerous children who died during the earthquake and the children victimized by toxic milk powder should be placed squarely on the CCP.

Backgound information about Gao Yu.

On March 21st 1997 the UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was awarded to Chinese journalist Gao Yu.

“The jury was unanimous in choosing Gao Yu who has been fighting for years for press freedom in her country. She has paid, and is still paying, with her own freedom for her commitment to media independence which UNESCO supports” said Claude Moisy, President of UNESCO’s Advisory Group for Press Freedom.

According to the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), which nominated the Chinese journalist, Gao Yu began her career in 1979 as a reporter for the China News Service. In 1988 she became deputy editor-in-chief of Economics Weekly, run by dissident intellectuals. She also worked as a freelance journalist for several newspapers in China and Hong Kong. In November 1988, she published an article in Hong Kong’s Mirror Monthly which the Mayor of Beijing called “the political programme” of the “turmoil and rebellion”. He labeled Gao Yu an “enemy of the people”. She was detained in 1989 following the Tiananmen protests and released 14 months later due to health problems. She was arrested again on Oct 2, 1993 and sentenced in Nov. 1994 to six years imprisonment for “leaking state secrets’
