Grendell Announces Resolution Affirming
Ohio’s Sovereignty Approved by Senate Committee
COLUMBUS—State Senator Tim Grendell (R- Chesterland) announced that Senate Concurrent Resolution 13 was passed out of the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans’ Affairs Committee this week. The resolution, which Grendell sponsored with Senator Keith Faber (R- Celina), urges the federal government to respect the 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution and adhere only to the rights and responsibilities delegated by the states to the federal government.
“The federal government continues to expand and is exerting its powers in areas that were traditionally the purview of the states,” Grendell said. “This resolution will serve to remind Congress and the federal government of Ohio’s sovereignty over its own affairs and its people.”
The 10th Amendment reads: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Several other states, including New Hampshire, Arizona, Michigan and Missouri have introduced similar resolutions; however, the version sponsored by Senators Grendell and Faber does not threaten secession – it only seeks to reaffirm Ohio’s sovereignty.
Having been approved by the committee, Senate Concurrent Resolution 13 now awaits a vote by the full Senate. If you are interested in seeing this pass, please contact Ohio Senate President Bill Harris at the Ohio Senate State House 201, Columbus, Ohio 43215, or by phone/E-mail: 614-446-8086, Bill.Harris@senate.state.oh.us
