Pakistan: Muslims burn Christian man as policeman rapes his wife

http://www.nowpublic.com/world/pakistan-muslims-burn-christian-man-...

Washington, D.C. (March 23, 2010)– Travesty of justice does not fit the description of the events. This is simple barbarism.

International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that a Christian man, Arshed Masih, died yesterday after Muslims burned him alive for refusing to recant his faith. Additionally, a Muslim policeman raped Masih’s wife.

Masih and his wife, Martha, worked and lived at the house of Sheik Mohammad Sultan, a powerful Muslim businessman in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, since 2005.

Pakistan's most powerful man, army chef General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani is from the Rawalpindi area and is visiting the U.S. capitol.

In January, Muslim religious leaders and Sheik Sultan asked Masih and his family to convert to Islam. Masih and his family refused to convert and informed Sheik Sultan that they were going to quit working for him. The Sheik became furious and warned Masih that he would kill him if he quit. Masih told his family and friends about the entire incident. Christian leaders tried to persuade the Sheik to let Masih and his family leave his house.

On March 14, Sheik Sultan`s house was robbed. He filed a case of theft of 500,000 Rupees ($ 5,952) against Martha. After taking them for questioning, the police assaulted Masih and raped Martha. Two days later, Sheik Sultan told the couple that he would ask the police to release them if they converted to Islam. The couple refused to recant their faith.

On March 19, Masih was set on fire in front of the police station. At the time, three Muslim religious leaders and three policemen were present at the scene. The perpetrators have not been identified.

Masih was taken to the Holy Family Hospital where he received treatment for three days before finally dying today.

Masih’s children Mary, 12, Nasir, 10, and Neha, 7, are deeply traumatized after witnessing acts of brutality against their family at the hands of Muslims.

ICC’s Regional Manager for South Asia, Jonathan Racho, said “We are outraged and deeply saddened by the murder of Masih and the rape of Martha by the police. As this case clearly indicates, Pakistani Christians are treated as less than animals by the Muslims. We urge the president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zadari, and other high level government officials to bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice.”

Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, president of Pakistan Christian Congress, condemned the killing of Masih and rape of his wife.“ Rape of Martha Bibi before her children by Muslim police officials and burning of her husband took place just a few miles from building of the Supreme Court of Pakistan where Muslim jusdges sitting on benches of justice have no sympathy with Christian victims. Perhaps in the eyes of these judges rape of an "infidel woman" is not a crime."

Please call the Pakistani Embassy in your country and demand of the officials of Pakistan to thoroughly investigate the heinous crime committed against Masih and Martha and bring all the perpetrators to justice.

We have not figured out how the new site will be formated. It will be similar to featured blogs vs all blogs. The admins like myself act like magazine editors and highlight what we think is important and relevant to the site.

Where as I could see where one would think this is censorship I assure you that is not our intent. I personally dont have an agenda, I just have a vision of what we are trying to do here. Hopefully we can get together on this vision before the new site is fully operational.

KLC suggested having a policy where no one would be allowed to argue from a "you are wrong" and " I am right" type of perspective. This would certainly end a lot of unnecessary thread wars .I think we all can accept that what we know as truth may not be the same truth as seen by others.

On a personal note I can see where one would feel offended by many post here.
The one thing I have learned as a member of a social network is tolerance. I see a lot of subjects posted on the site that are neither interesting to me and sometimes verging on all out prejudice IMO , however I just move on past them.

We are a social network and this means many perspectives will be presented and it spurs debate. The last thing I want is group think, this isn't my personal blog nor is it anyone persons.

AND WHO IS GOING TO DECIDE WHAT IS RELEVANT?? HOW 'BOUT PEOPLE SAY WHAT THEY WISH TO SAY AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT CHANGE THE CHANNEL. I THOUGHT WE WERE ABOUT FREEDOM FOR EVERYONE.

IF FREEDOM OF RELIGION IS NOT RELEVANT THEN NO HUMAN RIGHT IS RELEVANT. THESE EXAMPLES OF "DESPICABLE ACTS OF INHUMANITY" ARE EXACTLY THE KIND OF EVENTS THE NWO WILL USE TO USHER IN IT'S ONE WORLD RELIGION WITH THE FULL MILITARY MIGHT TO ENFORCE THE TYPE OF WORSHIP THEY DECIDE IS ACCEPTABLE.

WE ARE INVOLVED IN A SPIRITUAL WAR THAT MANIFESTS IN THE PHYSICAL.

I AM SURE THE DEVELOPERS OF THE NEW SITE WILL DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT AND THAT IS FINE I JUST WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE INFORMATION FLOW FREELY AND WITHOUT CENSORSHIP LIKE IT HAS HERE.

MY OPINION HOPEFULY IT IS "RELEVANT".

Life has become harder and more dangerous for Christians in Pakistan in recent years. Islamic militants see the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as wars on Muslims – and they regard Pakistan’s Christians as agents of the United States and her allies. In 2009 a large mob of radical Muslims attacked Christians in Gojra and Korian. The rioting started with a cry of blasphemy at a Christian wedding in the village of Korian, a few hours’ drive from Lahore. A boy cut up an Arabic textbook to use for confetti and some said the words printed on it were from the Koran.

A mob of about 800 mustered, armed with guns and explosives. Witnesses say some of the attackers were outsiders, including members of radical organisations linked to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. They were well-armed. 'We heard an announcement from the mosque that the Christians had disgraced the Koran and that Muslims should come and kill them,' said Pastor Khaliq Barkat (47), whose New Apostolic Church was destroyed. 'They threatened to burn us alive in our houses.'

Mehnga Masih, a 54-year-old teacher, escaped with his wife and nine children. 'We heard the shouting of the attackers. They were saying, 'Kill these Christians.' They came to my house. My family and I were locked inside, hiding. They threatened that if we did not convert to Islam they would kill us. We were really frightened. All the time we were praying and asking Jesus to save us.'

Many years ago the government parcelled up the land to Muslims and to Christians. The part the Christians live in is known as the Colony. A highway was built, the village grew and the land became more valuable, more desirable. 'This was not a blasphemy case,' said Katherine Sapna, a programme officer for CLAAS (Centre for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement). 'This land has become valuable ' they just wanted to grab the property.' The government has rebuilt the 47 houses destroyed in Korian, but no one has replaced the cattle which were stolen or the jobs the Christians have lost ' local employers now refuse to employ them.

The wave of persecution spread to neighbouring Gojra, too. Two days after the attack at Lahore, the mob, now more than 1000 strong, descended on Gojra, in Punjab Province, looting and destroying 100 homes. Mosque loud speakers chanted, 'Kill the American dogs.' Josefine Akhlas was at her parents' house with her children. 'My house was totally destroyed. My husband was burnt alive. We did nothing for which we were punished so cruelly,' Josefine said. Seven members of her family perished in the flames ' the youngest was just four.

Walter Masih lost his wife, Bervan, and 30-year-old daughter, Asia. 'They started to set fire to the houses and opened fire with weapons. My daughter was caught in the fire and did not come out. She was six months pregnant.'

Christians asked for police to help, but only a handful of officers turned up. Later, when more police arrived, the mob opened fire on them. The mob blocked the road so the fire brigade could not get through. 'We are very scared,' said Walter. 'We can do nothing ' only believe in Jesus. We have a strong trust in Him.' Walter said he has forgiven the people who killed his wife and daughter. 'We are the followers of Jesus. If He says forgive your enemies, then we forgive them.'

Young Christian men rallied to defend their village. Armed mostly with sticks and stones, they faced the gun-wielding mob and tried to buy enough time for the women and children to escape. Shehzad Masih (22) was among the defenders. 'When we saw them with their deadly weapons we were frightened, but we trusted in God,' he said, holding his 18-month-old son, Sahel. 'They set fire to houses with chemicals. Within minutes they were burnt out.' When the attackers got to Shehzad's house, they grabbed Sahel. 'They picked up my son and said, 'We will take him with us and make him a terrorist.''

Shehzad was powerless to save him, but among the crowd, a local man took pity on them. He carried the 18-month-old boy to the safety of his mother. 'He was a Muslim,' said Shehzad. 'I was helpless and I think that was God's mercy.' 'Since 9/11 the situation has become critical for Christians in Pakistan,' said Joseph Francis, founder of CLAAS. 'Muslims feel that the coalition forces launched an attack on Muslim countries and the Muslim people. Since 2001 there have been about 58 attacks on Christian colleges, schools, hospitals and churches. So many people have been murdered. They are calling Christians 'American dogs.'' Even though the attackers may strike again, many Christians vow to stand firm in the faith. Pastor Khaliq Barkat has rebuilt the church that was destroyed in the attacks in Korian.

'I pray for the Muslim attackers who destroy our houses. We cannot fight them because Jesus said forgive your enemies. I would say to them, 'Though you treat us badly, I forgive you in the name of Jesus.''
