MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner after the girl threw a tantrum and the police chief defended the action.

The girl's family demanded Tuesday that this central Georgia city change policy so that other children aren't treated the same way. They say the child was shaken up by being put in a cell at the police station.

Salecia Johnson, 6, was accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture in an outburst Friday at Creekside Elementary School, Macon television station WMAZ-TV (http://on.wmaz.com/HPb7nr ) reported. Police said the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.

The school called police. The police report says when an officer tried to calm the child in the principal's office, she resisted and was handcuffed. The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property.

Police Chief Dray Swicord says the department's policy is to handcuff people in certain situations.

It's true that public schools are indoctrination centers but this is NOT the school's fault, it's totally the parent's fault.  My child had two years of home schooling, two years of private school (at two different schools) and the rest was public school. There were good and bad in all three situations, nothing was perfect.  If a teacher has to take the time to calm down a student, then that's taking time away from the other students and that's not fair. That's why disruptive students are sent to the principals office. And that's why principals make a higher salary than teachers. And for all we know he tried...right up until that shelf flew off the wall and hit him in the head. At that point, I don't blame him one bit for calling the cops.

I say if I was there I'm betting I would have calmed her down and not have needed to call the Police. Alot of these teachers just don't want to be bothered and so dumped the problem on the dumb Principal. To me it just shows the callousness of these School teachers. I do believe that because of the lack of ingenuity on the part of the School employee's they had to call Police. I was in law enforcement and had I been called for this I would have laughed and would have scolded the School employee's. However we live in an age where even Police are not properly trained and are allowed to commit outrageous behaviour toward its citizens. The poor darling of course had to learn the hard way but sometimes these lessons can teach children that they can't always get their way in school.

Wow to: "This kid is a hoodlum. She needs to find a job and start being a productive member of society".

How old is she again? Is'nt it true that it's 3 strikes and then it's prison? It makes no sense unless Prisons are the future schools.....Schools have become prisons/indoctrination centres these days, anyway; John Taylor Gatto calls it "State Controlled Consciousness"

The school was forced to call the cops because of moms like me who would threaten to sue them if my child was  even in the same class with this demon child. She may be only 6 but if you've ever been around an out-of-control kid like this, you know they are incredibly strong for their size.  Yes, in the good ole days, the teachers, esp nuns, would have whipped her into shape. But in our litigious society, those days are long gone. I agree with Suzanne Stapler but I'll bet the parents are completely clueless about nutrition and behavior otherwise the kid wouldn't be acting out like this in the first place. But if I had a child in that school, I would be organizing a petition right about now to get this kid put in special needs classes or expelled.

@ gilbertpaul martin:

' Much ado about nothing. In my day the Nuns would have whipped her little ass and she would not do that again.'

Yeh, sure. Check this harrowing video by Kevin Annett, about the church and nuns in Canada:

Hi 12160,

I'm sure you'll be interested in this case, if you haven't heard about it already: http://freedominourtime.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/predators-of-marengo...

Grandmother tortured for buying Sudafed decongestant. The whole Justice system, from DA, Judge and cops are some sick puppies in Alabama (and elsewhere!). Unfortunately, it's not the odd 'bad apple'; it's more like an occasional good apple, once in a blue moon.
