RENO, Nev. -- Reno police have shot and killed a man in a downtown parking lot at the Circus Circus hotel-casino. Washoe County Sheriff's spokesman Armando Avina confirmed the fatal shooting occurred about 2 p.m. Friday after an officer pulled the man over for a routine traffic stop. Avina said a check of the man's identification brought back an alert about an "officer safety issue," which prompted other police units in the area to respond to the scene. Avina said a total of four officers arrived, at which point shots were fired. He said it is not immediately clear if the victim was armed or fired at the officers. No one else was in his vehicle. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the case along with police in Reno and neighboring Sparks.
