There have been a couple of fairly recent TV documentaries funded by the Discovery Channel attempting to explore and find the source of the malevolent forces responsible for driving the human population out of Portlock, Alaska. Since they usually find nothing of much consequence the film footage is usually relegated to the cast of characters to the research party themselves. These disappointing and irritating insults to your intelligence will usually be these people telling you they feel afraid, they just heard a knock on a tree, or that the place just plain feels weird! Well, I’m sorry folks but that’s not scientific evidence nor does it constitute any threat to the participants either.

How not to confront

Steve Isdahl, who hosts the “How to Hunt” Channel on YouTube says after all the freakish encounters he’s had with not only Sasquatch in all his nocturnal and daytime hunting encounters that he’s almost been killed by a Grizzly or two, and has faced off with them in life or death duels! Steve says he would not go looking for an encounter in Portlock. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t want anything to do with Sasquatch so whenever he’s alone tracking game he sends out a mental message to whoever might be in his area, “Hey, I’m just here to hunt. I mean you no harm. Just leave me alone.” He has had too many close calls to be inviting anymore.

Stumblebums or professionals?

Getting back to an expedition that involved a team of six researchers, and a professional boat captain and his ship, they entered Chatham Bay in 2018. Where they were dropped off in a motorized rubber raft near the shoreline of what is left of Portlock. They still had over a mile trek through the heavy brush and timber of the area to get into the village proper. They had arrived offshore in the ship around 1:30 AM but did not attempt to make landfall at that hour and waited until the crack of dawn. With reports of the gruesome murders I would have thought they would be better armed! I mean one guy who complained about being sea sick if the water got choppy had a 44 magnum handgun and he had to teach another guy how to fire an automatic shotgun. Seemed to me to be an invitation to disaster.

Two anomalies

To make matters a little more hazardous, the Portlock area is frequented by Black Bears and Brown Bears so they are already on constant alert from that threat. There were two scientific pieces of evidence that the team did arrive at in Portlock that were inexplicable by normal means. 1) Uprooted trees that have been crammed upside down into the earth deep enough that they are anchored in the soil. This would require an incredible amount of strength, and bears simply do not display this kind of behavior! 2) Is the presence of a separation zone where

What strikes fear in the hearts of bear?

Portlock seems to be divided into two different territorial divisions where bear migration comes to an abrupt halt as evidenced by no indicators of spoor, paw prints, crushed down grasses or bark ripped away as bears usually do, and absence of any game kills or skeletons left after bear kills. This demonstrates that something is preventing the bears from venturing into these areas. Something that the researchers theorize is where the territory of the Nantinaq have dominion! This is corroborated by other hunters and Cryptid researchers that bears have been seen fleeing Big Foot encounters and do not compete against them for Deer either! This says something when even Black Bear being smaller than Brown Bears will chase down Elk and Moose while even challenging cougars for their food! These are dangerous and powerful foes faced by Bears that they fearlessly confront, but for some reason will not tangle with Nantinaq!

What can scare bears away from their favorite fruit?

So there is a visible lack of bear presence in the areas where the territory of the murderous cryptid of Portlock remains under their control. In this zone where no bears were foraging at all the team found fresh blueberries, a favorite meal of bears that were completely untouched. Blueberry patches are frequent scenes of bear mauling’s where people have been eating the tasty fruit and stumble upon a bear with the same thought in mind so most people exercise extreme caution whenever harvesting blueberries, yet no evidence at all that the bears have been foraging here. With their incredible sense of smell, 20 times that of dogs, there would hardly be any blueberries that would go untouched by bears when the fruit is in season. So, there was apparent circumstantial evidence of something unnatural going on in Portlock.

Disappointing conclusion

They found one standing cabin left in the ghost town and bedded down for one night, having to cover a deteriorated wall with some thermal blankets to try to keep the inside of the cabin shielded from the bitterly cold winds. The grounds were damp and muddy but no huge footprints that would be considered Big Foot tracks were encountered either. The local Indians believe in the Wendigo, a legendary creature of only two dimensions capable of killing and devouring a man without leaving tracks and that this entity is more spiritual than an animal of the forest. However, aside from hearing an occasional knock, the viewer was presented with an unmolested production crew taping that was more about them than the monstrous presence of some “Hairy Man” creature!
