Scientists call for a boycott of fluorine compounds

A number of prominent scientists urges consumers to avoid fluoride substances wherever possible.

Most of the researchers themselves dealing with persistent fluorinated compounds makes even everything they can to avoid being exposed to these substances.

"If I can possibly avoid it, so I will not have polyfluorinated substances indoors," says professor of environmental medicine, Philippe Grandjean from Southern University.

He stands behind a study showing that fluoride compounds makes vaccinations works less well in children, and he believes that the limit for these substances is 100 times too high.

Philippe Grandjean is well aware that the substances found in so many different products that he can not possibly keep them away from home.

"But I can ask the stores if the products contain polyfluorinated substances. The more people who ask and prefer products that are labeled as PFC-free, the better. It can lead to an evolution, without we need special legislation, "said the professor.

The main part coming from the food
His Dutch colleague, Pim Voogt, head of an EU project, which examines how the substances end up in food. Most of our intake happens to most people through food, the fish has traditionally been seen as the biggest source. Here can not even a professor avoid the drugs.

"But many other places are there alternatives to PFC. They include food packaging, "says the Pim Voogt.

He also mentions waterproofing spray for shoes and textiles, which is available both with and without fluoride drugs and talks about his own purchase of sofa.

"I could choose to have it treated against dirt. I asked if impregnation contained PFC. It did, and so I said no thanks, "says Dutch professor.

He believes that governments should require that fluoride compounds are labeled, making it simpler for consumers to avoid them.

Pia Brunn Poulsen from Force Technology follows the label actually guarantees against fluorine compounds. It implies that she only buys Eco-label cookie sheet.

At the same time helps prevent as well as other researchers microwave popcorn. Nor carpeting, which can be impregnated with persistent fluorinated substances, comes home in her living room.

"But I have a raincoat," she says with a finding that virtually all rainwear containing fluorinated substances.
