Talk Radio's Alex Jones, the Most Paranoid Man in America (RollingStone)

It's just past 9 a.m. when Alex Jones pulls his Dodge Charger into a desolate parking lot in Austin. From the outside, the squat, single-story office complex that Jones calls his "command center" resembles a moon base surrounded by fields of dying grass. But inside, blinking banks of high-tech recording gear fill the studio where he broadcasts The Alex Jones Show, a daily talk show that airs on 63 stations nationwide. Jones draws a bigger audience online than Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck combined — and his conspiracy-laced rants make the two hosts sound like tea-sipping NPR hosts on Zoloft.

A stocky 37-year-old with a flop of brown hair and a beer gut, Jones usually bounds into the studio, eager to launch into one of his trademark tirades against the "global Stasi Borg state" — the corporate-surveillance prison planet that he believes is being secretly forged by an evil cabal of bankers, industrialists, politicians and generals. This morning, though, Jones looks deflated. Five days ago, a mentally disturbed 22-year-old named Jared Loughner opened fire on a crowd in Tucson, Arizona, killing six and seriously wounding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Loughner was reported to be a fan of Loose Change, a film Jones produced that has become the bible for those who believe 9/11 was an inside job.

This article appears in the March 17, 2011 issue of Rolling Stone. The issue is available now on newsstands and will appear in the online archive March 4.

"But on the same token, this article was a definite hit piece and puts a dark shadow on anyone that is a conspiracy theorist and who is a part of the truth movement. It lumps us all into the crazy AJ paranoid nut job bubble unfortunately."

I agree, Tara.  That is why those of us who keep a level head need to spread the real news.  Even if only 1 in 10 people listen to us and start to research on their own...that's one more person who knows the truth.  There's just too much at stake to not try.

Yes Ariessun, we do face our own truths, within and without and it is important for us to become leaders in our own right, to seek the truth for ourselves.

Jones was a big part in my waking up and I can't deny the man has done more for waking up people than anyone else in the truth movement. However, I got tired of all the fear mongering, ranting and raving like a lunatic and his overinflated ego. So, I chose to not listen to him anymore. I don't go around telling others not to listen to him because it is their choice. But for me, I sleep better at nights not listening to him anymore, lol. I choose to not live my life in fear of what may or may not be. That's not saying that I don't want to be informed about the many truths that are going on but that I don't want to be hearing the sky is falling in every other sentence or statement.

You're probably right Freedom, when you said that AJ has done this to himself. But on the same token, this article was a definite hit piece and puts a dark shadow on anyone that is a conspiracy theorist and who is a part of the truth movement. It lumps us all into the crazy AJ paranoid nut job bubble unfortunately.

He's one man and i doubt the public could have any worse of an opinion of conspiracy theorists than they do already. I doubt he knew Sheen was going to go off as hard core like he did and get sheen fired from this job.

Truth to tell, AJ has done this to himself. His latest antics on "The View" paint him as a self-aggrandizing, hyper-paranoid, self-promoting King of Obnoxious Conspiracy Theorists, that will sell out for anything, or anyone that will help promote his next video, his websites, his online Pay TV channels, and to buy Midas, Berkey, and any other of his many advertisers in which he receives a percentage. His shameless promoting of Charlie Sheen in the middle of his total meltdown, while desperately grasping onto his flaming coat-tails, and screaming, " They talk about Charlie Sheen while Moammar Gadhafi kills his own people! Infowars.com, Infowars.com!"

Disgraceful and a setback for the whole Truth Movement. If he is the face of the Truthers, then no wonder we are all looked at as fringe nutters, frothing at the mouth, and listening to no one.

Getting to close to comfort for some I would have to say!

Oh boy, sounds like a big ole smear campaign to me and I haven't even finished reading it. It's rather insulting to say the least and I'm not even the biggest AJ fan anymore either.
