The Assault

It’s two in the morning and I’m wide awake

I smell something burning on the other side of the lake

Can’t believe it’s me that you forsake

There’s more than our lives here that are at stake,

Quite ironic while living in exile

I can go a day without having a smile

You should get in my shoes and walk a mile

Lining up for the assault in single file,

Thanks for the dagger that you put in my heart

Knew I shouldn’t have trusted you from the start

Your personal brand of the poison dart

Thought I was perceptive but I wasn’t that smart,

Everyone will say stop living in the past

Try it when you feel like you’re swinging from the mast

Darkened clouds and the rain has come at last

They’ll say there’s always other fish in a sea so vast,

You may think that the words I utter are grim

I knew you’d never be happy with him

Emotional recovery it seems chances are slim

Maybe I’ll go for a workout at the gym,

There are voices I hear deep in the night

Some demonic some angelic in flight

Memories can be such a difficult blight

Where is home it seems way out of sight?

Too far away to ever feel you again

I think of this now and then

Much too late now to pretend
