I always tell my friends that a lame duck Congress is the most dangerous time for all of us in the two year cycle of a given U.S. Congress. Our representatives and senators seem to lose their inhibitions in this almost two month cycle, running rampant on our liberties like vacationers visiting Club Med.
The most recent evidence of this came this morning, in the form of a vote by the House Judiciary Committee on
S.3804, the
Combating Online Infringements And Copyrights Act.
Sounds reasonable, right? So did the Patriot Act, which is far from patriotic. So does "No Child Left Behind," which leaves children behind left and right with a smaller dosage of education as compared to what previous generations received. But back to this joke of a bill that can censor the Internet any way the government chooses.
There were 19 senators who voted on this. ALL of them voted yes. Democrats and Republicans alike. More proof that there is no left, and there is no right. There is "us" the people, and "them" in DC who think they work for themselves.
The "Internet 19" were:
* Patrick J. Leahy -- Vermont
* Herb Kohl -- Wisconsin
* Jeff Sessions -- Alabama
* Dianne Feinstein -- California
* Orrin G. Hatch -- Utah
* Russ Feingold -- Wisconsin
* Chuck Grassley -- Iowa
* Arlen Specter -- Pennsylvania
* Jon Kyl -- Arizona
* Chuck Schumer -- New York
* Lindsey Graham -- South Carolina
* Dick Durbin -- Illinois
* John Cornyn -- Texas
* Benjamin L. Cardin -- Maryland
* Tom Coburn -- Oklahoma
* Sheldon Whitehouse -- Rhode Island
* Amy Klobuchar -- Minnesota
* Al Franken -- Minnesota
* Chris Coons -- Delaware
And there you have it. The rank and file of both parties want to take away your First Amendment rights.
The cover story will be that this bill will attack the Torrent sites, which by the way, I view as legal. How is it my fault that someone invents a technology to make the purchasing of most media obsolete? Did the lobby behind automobiles early in 20th Century cry and whine and buy off DC to ban people from "illegally flying?" NO!
Let's not be fooled as to what the real purpose of this bill is. Implicit censorship of the Internet. They say this bill has no chance in the full body of the Senate. I would also suggest not being fooled by that either. Remember, a coup usually needs a stand down order, and the House and Senate have tons of "hidden ball tricks" built into their respective systems that they can play.
The Deamericanizing of America continues, and appears only to be speeding up.
