US soldier kills 16 Afghan Civilians: Children Among 16 dead

BALANDI, Afghanistan (AP) — An American soldier opened fire on villagers near his base in southern Afghanistan Sunday and killed 16 civilians, according to President Hamid Karzai who called it an "assassination" and furiously demanded an explanation from Washington. Nine children and three women were among the dead.

The killing spree deepened a crisis between U.S. forces and their Afghan hosts over Americans burning Muslim holy books on a base in Afghanistan. The burnings sparked weeks of violent protests and attacks that left some 30 people dead. Six U.S. service members have been killed by their Afghan colleagues since the Quran burnings came to light, but the violence had just started to calm down.

"This is an assassination, an intentional killing of innocent civilians and cannot be forgiven," Karzai said in a statement. He said he has repeatedly demanded the U.S. stop killing Afghan civilians.

KABUL — A U.S. soldier was taken into custody in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, a few hours after he opened fire on Afghan civilians, killing 10, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

The shooting took place at approximately 3 a.m. as a lone soldier walked off a checkpoint in Kandahar Province’s Panjwai district and opened fire on civilians in two villages, Javed Faisal, the director of the provincial government’s media center, said in a phone interview.

Citing preliminary reports, Faisal said at least 10 people were killed and five were wounded. Provincial authorities said they were awaiting news from an investigative team sent to the villages before releasing a definitive death toll.

It is highly unusual for American soldiers to wander alone off base. Officials did not immediately say whether they know what prompted the shooting.

“We strongly condemn this incident,” Zaimai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said. “We have sent a delegation to investigate the scene.”

True. After reading the title of the article alone I couldn't help but want to know WHY he killed those people-- IF the story is true. I want to hear it from him-- the shooter. What pissed him off so much to kill allegedly innocent civilians??? That makes no sense....

"Bullshit" and "half-cocked" story sounds about right. For all we know, this could be a bullshit story to keep the Afghanistan war in the news for some reason or another. Hell, I'd believe the PARENTS of the shooter who weren't even there at the time before I'll believe this bullshit story-- a man murdering ten people "just because". That and the story tells us that the victims (if any exist) were in "two separate villages". This is NOT a lucky "I've emptied my clip in a hurry and ten people are dead. Sorry.". This story tells me that the shooter (if this story actually happened) had to "walk across town" and then begin firing again.

Bullshit....there IS more to this story that we're not being told. Period.
