'Why Our Great-Grandparents Have Such Fond Memories Of Their Youth...'

A bottle of Bayer's 'Heroin'.

Between 1890 and 1910 heroin was sold as a non-addictive substitute for morphine.
It was also used to treat children suffering with a strong cough.

Coca Wine, anyone?

Metcalf's Coca Wine was one of a huge variety of wines with cocaine on the market. Everybody used to say that it would make you happy and it would also work as a medicinal treatment.

Mariani Wine.
Mariani wine (1875) was the most famous Coca wine of it's time.

Pope Leo XIII used to carry one bottle with him all the time.
He awarded Angelo Mariani (the producer) with a Vatican gold medal.

Maltine.
Produced by the Maltine Manufacturing Company of New York .
It was suggested that you should take a full glass with or after every meal. Children should only take half a glass.

A paperweight promoting C.F. Boehringer & Soehne ( Mannheim , Germany ).

They were proud of being the biggest producers in the
world of products containing Quinine and Cocaine.

Opium for Asthma:
At 40% alcohol plus 3 grams of opium per tablet,
it didn't cure you, but you didn't care...

Cocaine Tablets (1900).

All stage actors, singers, teachers and preachers had to have them for a maximum performance. Great to 'smooth' the voice.

Opium for newborns

Very popular for children in 1885.

I'm sure this would make them sleep well
(not only the Opium, but also 46% alcohol)!

It's no wonder they were called, 'The Good Old Days'!!
From cradle to grave...
Everyone Was Stoned!!!

Not only did they relieve the pain, they made the children very happy!

I think it has to be much more than a ride on Air Force One, don't you think? Maybe it's not a treat, maybe they've got something on him.

I do like Kucinich but he sold out on the health care bill. Oh well, he recently announced that he would NOT run against Obama. I realize that some statements made by Libertarians sometimes sound callous. But when you compare Austrian economics to Keynesian economics, it becomes more clear how govt interference actually does more harm to those who need help. And putting people in prison for victimless crimes like using drugs really hurts people and entire communities and only supports the prison-industrial complex. If drugs were legalized it would cripple the cartels too. People would at first be curious and some might try them but after the initial excitement wore off, people would lose interest and things would go back to the way it was in our great-grandparents day. Those who want to use drugs already use them because they are so easy to get.

nikki, my ideal canidates would be dennis kuchinch and cythina mc kinney.
i have always avoid libertarians, because i felt they didn't represent the
people who truely need help.
but judging by the crapola this country fevorishly elects year after ron paul would be a refeshing change.

My grandfather told me that when he was young people never thought anything about marijuana, it was just another product sold in the tobacco shops. And cocaine and opium were the natural pain relievers of the day. All drugs should be legal:
