ALERT :
New Credit Card Rules :
Thursday marked the beginning of a new era in the consumer credit card industry as the first of a host of new regulations come into play.
Card companies, some advocates say, are using the new legislation as an excuse to raise rates and institute new fees to make up for revenue that will be lost once all of the provisions of CARD are in place.
Also included in the CARD act are provisions to ensure that cards are no longer marketed to students under age 21 without some proof the student can pay the bill, a ban on rate increases on existing balances, a requirement that payments must be applied to the portion of the balance with the highest interest rate.
