Malcolm Muggeridge (1903-1990), from his youth was a great admirer of the Soviet Union, and in the 1930's went there with the idea of staying, but soon became one of the country's harshest critics. Being one of "them" when he went there to bask in the glow of the revolution. But he didn't check his eyes at the door and reported on the horrors he saw and the "useful fools" who helped cover for Stalin for years.
