The major problem with a "blanket call" for semi-automatic weapons is the fact that MOST guns can be classed as semi-automatic. A handgun, be it a revolver or a so called automatic, can be classed as a semi-automatic weapon. Look up the definitions of words before you start throwing them around. Also, the "effective" range of any weapon depends greatly on who is using that weapon. A trained marksman can hit their target at hundreds of yards with a handgun, and thousands or yards with a rifle. Someone needs to learn a lot more about weapons before they advocate what to ban and what to permit.
