COSTA MESA, Calif.—Mitt Romney stood by his comments captured on a hidden camera at a closed-door fundraiser earlier this year in which he called supporters of President Barack Obama "victims" and said they are reliant on government handouts.

In a hastily arranged news conference Monday night, he called his words "off the cuff" and "not elegantly stated," but given several opportunities to back off the comments, he did not.

Romney said he was merely talking about the "political process of drawing people into my own campaign." He described the incident as a "snippet of a question and answer session" and called on the full video to be released to show the question and his response in its full context.

Asked if he was worried that he had offended the 47 percent of people he mentioned in the statement, Romney did not back off his remarks.

"It's not elegantly stated, let me put it that way," Romney said. "I'm speaking off the cuff in response to a question, and I'm sure I can state it more clearly in a more effective way than I did in a setting like that and so I'm sure I'll point that out as time goes on."

But, he added, "It's a message which I am going to carry and continue to carry."

Still, Romney ignored a question about whether he really believes what he was saying. Asked if his words were reflective of his "core convictions," Romney simply walked away.

Romney's remarks came hours after Mother Jones magazine posted a video shot from inside a fundraiser in Boca Raton, Fla., in May, which immediately went viral. Romney, who was headlining a fundraiser here, delayed his appearance to comment on the video to his traveling press corps in hopes of quelling the controversy over his remarks.

Speaking from a conference room inside a performing arts center here, Romney walked to the podium wearing a smile and sounded intentionally upbeat as he read from notes.

Asked what he meant by the word "victims," Romney cast his remarks as simply accentuating the differences between his campaign and Obama's.

"My campaign is about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again, particularly those who don't have work," Romney said. "His whole campaign is based on getting people jobs again, putting people back to work. This is ultimately a question about direction for the country. Do you believe in a government-centered society that provides more and more benefits or do you believe instead in a free enterprise society where people are able to pursue their dreams?"

The more I think about it, the more I want obma to win. When he doesn't have to worry about being reelected, his true colors will come through. Once that happens, we will never elect a dem again because everyone will see how retarded they were to put the socialist party in office in the first place. Maybe the economy completely collapsibg will be a good thing. I am prepared. Nobody will ever find me if the shtf. Hope u are all prepared...especially those with a barry boner.

He is absolutely correct. One item he omitted - he is more of a running dog for Israel than BO and that is the reason I don't support him.

we have to reverse what all the leftest in power are doing to conservative patriots, If any of you are Employers or in a position where you can fire people, get ride of all the leftest democrats, put them in the unemployment line, hire only conservative teachers, dump the leftest, we have to stop playing fair, they don't.

IMO the 47% he was talking about are the liberal leftest democrats.

if we don't play the game and we don't vote Obama is going to remain in office, we all know where he will take us, I will reluctantly vote for the other guy, at the very lest it will buy us more time to get more patriots into office and make changes locally from the bottom up.

By the way, I am not a 1%er...I make 9 bucks an hour busting my hump all day. I just have common sense, something most people in my "class" don't have. Romney wasn't talking about people who pay their taxes and DO work for a living. He was talking about the people who sit on their butts watching free government cable while they post on here from their free government internet and talk on their free government cell phones while they stuff their fat faces with free government food bought with free food stamps. Those people are the 47% he is talking about. They think they deserve a free ride. Meanwhile, we who don't make ANY extra money have to pay for their lazy asses on top of our own families. They don't realize all this free money comes out of OUR pockets, not some magic money tree planted on the white house lawn. You can only steal from the rich for so long before there becomes a poor class and a poorer class only. What will America look like once all the leaches have taken everything and put nothing back into the economy? Well...it will look like our current day situation. Mounds of debt to pay for the lazy people and the frivolous Washington spenders....welcome to America...land of the broke and the home of the entitled.

If you are offended by this video, you are probably part of that 47%...bottom line. To the guy that said how horrible it is that his birth defect friend was just going to die if Romney is elected...you are a tool. Part of the 47%. Obama zombies will never change for a few reasons. I think mitt was completely correct about the lazy class never voting for him. Aside from those who feel entitled, there are also those who voted the idiot in in the first place and don't want to admit they are wrong, those who don't want to look racist, and those who actually believe (doubt understand) the numbers being thrown out but the white house...those people...they are all Obama zombies. Anyone with any common sense can see that what mitt is saying is true...just not the "popular" or "PC" way to put it. Well, I say good for him. Its about time ONE word of truth came out of a politician's mouth. Will I be voting for him? Hell no. Neither of these idiots have earned my vote. But don't degrade a man for telling the truth. The hard core Obama zombies will ALWAYS be on Barry's sack and there is nothing any other candidate can do about it. Better to concentrate where your efforts will produce something. Would you try to plant a garden by digging a hole in a rock?

All I know is what I hear on TV and on the radio.  On one side you get a man that loves the one percent.  On the other you get a man that is slow to react, but when he does it's sometimes great. 

Poverty is why the one percent depend on the Gov.  If you throw them to the wolves then you will have a very unhappy threatening bunch of people.  There will be riots in the streets. 

You can't take health care away from the people, and as much as Romney thinks he can reverse Obama care he wont be able to kill the whole Bill.  He doesn't go into office and then start throwing out everything that Obama has put in place.  This I heard on TV and on the radio from several people not a select few. 

Romney wants to kill the medicare program and then hand out a one time lump sum to those that were on medicare.  He said a good figure will be around 7 or 8 grand a piece.  

I know a man in his 40s he gets medicare he is on dialysis that cost around 3 grand a month and more.  He has been hospitalized five times this year.  His 7 or 8 grand would of been gone in less than two months.   

Say what you will but this guy works for a living.   (When he can)  he has never sat on his ass waiting for a hand out.  There are plenty more people like him out there. 

This woman I know also works, and she has cancer.  She makes real good money.   She owns her own house, owns a car that is three years old, and she dishes out around 4500 per six months in cash and has insurance that pays the rest.   What she also has is a birth defect.   If Romney kills the Obama mandate that stipulates that insurance can drop her because she has gone over her limit three times in her life already, and she has a precondition.  She will no longer get any help, and her treatable cancer will turn into a fatal cancer, and if that doesn't kill her, then her birth defect will.  Hospitals will stop taking patents unless they have cash upfront!

  Since when have we turned into a society that decides who gets to live and whom gets to die?  Why do we have so many people trying to act and play g_D?  We are not animals but Romney sure is treating people as such.  Now add the many turning a blind eye to what will happen as soon as he signs the papers. 

Do you remember a few years back when Hospitals ER's refused to go out their doors and pick up a person that was severely hurt or sick?  One died, the hospital said they can't go outside to gather the person that is what the ambulances do.   Well welcome to Romney healthcare.   That same thing will be happening on our streets because hospitals will eventually refuse to take people without a valid insurance card.  Ambulances also will refuse to transport them.   Hospitals will be pulling the plug because they will claim it is best for the patent, but in reality it benefits them because the patent only has 7 or 8 grand to give them, and their bill is costing them  $2500 a day in intensive care. They have been in a coma for five days.. so do the math.  Talk about caveman days... 

Another thing not related to Obama care that Romney mentioned in a news brief that I am sure everyone here saw is he said flat out without calling Obama a wuss said that Obama was not handling Afghanistan, Syria, and so on correctly he should of sent troops in.    Increase our troops, give more money to our war efforts, stop cutting back funding and go in and get things taken care of.   I really understood this as him saying he would put us into another war.  I had to rewind the DVR so I could listen again.  

So now we learn Romney doesn't care if we are poor and have no insurance.  Why would you put a man in office that clearly has no heart for ALL the people of the USA?  I have to pick the lessor of the two evils.  That will be Obama.  Yes Obama is no angel, but at least all the people have a chance at prosperity, Life, and the pursuit of happiness and not a select few.
