Check out Mark Passio's series of What On Earth Is Happening Podcasts - http://www.whatonearthishappening.com/podcast?start=150 - for a time there had been no updates since August 2015, but all episodes up to 2016-01-11 are now available.
Most of the podcasts come with additional material such as slides (images) and weblinks.
I strongly advise starting at show #001 (2010-03-30) if you are going to get Passio's take on everything.
